GEORGIA BULLDOGS

Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia Bulldogs VS. Mercer Bears

Mercer (6-6) at Georgia (6-3)

GAME NOTES: Seeking to extend a three-game winning streak, the Georgia Bulldogs will entertain the Mercer Bears in a non-conference clash at Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday evening.

Mercer, which made a bit of a run in the NCAA Tournament last season with a huge win over Duke, hasn't been as hot this year following the loss of several key contributors. The Bears are 6-6 and have lost two of their last three games, including one to Tennessee (64-54) in the team's latest outing.

Georgia is 6-3 on the season after the Bulldogs rattled off three straight victories in their last three contests, and are now 5-0 at home in 2014-15. Georgia had no issues with taking down Seton Hall, 65-47, in the team's most recent game.

Mercer and Georgia - both based in the Peach State - have met a total of 77 times on the court in their history. The Bulldogs own a one-sided advantage in the all-time series, 54-23, which includes a 58-49 victory over the Bears in 2012.

Tennessee used a strong offensive effort across the board and a scoring defense that held Mercer to just 32.6 percent shooting in the game to easily take down the Bears. Ike Nwamu was the only player for Mercer that had any sort of impact offensively, as the guard netted 30 points in the losing effort. T.J. Hallice grabbed a team-best seven rebounds, and Phillip Leonard dished out five assists in the losing effort.

Like the game against Tennessee, Nwamu has been the only sparkplug for the Mercer offense all season long. His 18.3 ppg is the best scoring average on the Bears, and the only one in double figures this season. The next closest scoring total belongs to Hallice, who is scoring 9.4 ppg for a team that is averaging 65.0 ppg as a unit. Mercer's defense had held strong though, allowing opponents to score just 61.2 ppg through the first 12 contests. Hallice owns a team-best 6.2 rpg average this season.

Georgia went up against a Seton Hall team that had just one loss on the season, and the Bulldogs easily took down the Pirates by holding them to 29.6 percent shooting from the field, which included a 3-of-20 mark from 3-point range. Kenny Gaines netted 15 points to lead the team, while Marcus Thornton added 13 points with eight rebounds in the winning effort. Georgia's reserves were quiet in the game, although J.J. Frazier came off the bench to grab a team-best 11 rebounds with seven assists in 28 minutes of action.

The Bulldogs, who average 73.6 ppg this season on 47.4 percent shooting, are aided offensively by four double-digit scorers. Thornton tops the team at 14.7 ppg, adding in a team-best 7.1 rpg mark. Gaines chips in 11.7 ppg, Charles Mann nets 11.4 ppg and Nemanja Djurisic rounds out the group at 10.4 ppg. Georgia's scoring defense has been solid as well, limiting opponents to 64.9 ppg on just 37.9 percent shooting.

If the Bulldogs can effectively shut down Nwamu and limit him in his scoring efforts, then Georgia will have no issue whatsoever getting past the Bears for a fourth straight win. Even if Nwamu posts his usual numbers, Mercer doesn't have the offensive firepower that Georgia possesses.
