Georgetown Hoyas VS. Butler Bulldogs

Butler (4-1) vs. Georgetown (4-1)

GAME NOTES: The Georgetown Hoyas and the Butler Bulls meet up on Friday afternoon at Imperial Arena in the third-place game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.

Butler pulled off a huge upset in the quarterfinals by defeating No. 5 North Carolina, 74-66, but its quest for a championship came to an end in the semifinals with a 59-46 loss to Oklahoma. The setback dropped the Bulldogs to 4-1.

Georgetown pulled off an outstanding quarterfinal-round upset over nationally- ranked Florida, 66-65 in overtime, and it positioned itself for another shocking victory against No. 2 Wisconsin in the semifinals on Thursday but could not hold on down the stretch en route to a 68-65 loss. It was the Hoyas' first loss this season in five tries.

Georgetown has won all three previous meetings in the all-time series with Butler.

The Bulldogs' chances in the semifinals were squashed early in the first half once Oklahoma pulled away with a 16-0 run, and they never got within single digits of the lead the rest of the way. They simply could not get their shots to fall, as they made less than 24 percent of their field goal attempts, including just 4-of-23 from 3-point range. Kellen Dunham was the only player to score in double figures with 17 points, but he did so on just 5-of-16 from the field.

It was an uncharacteristic performance for Butler, which shoots 43.4 percent form the field for 73.8 ppg this season. It also plays excellent defense, allowing a mere 53.8 ppg while boasting a +6.0 turnover margin. Dunham shoots just a shade over 40 percent from the field but generates enough volume to put up a team-best 17.0 ppg. Kelan Martin comes off the bench to net 11.0 ppg, while Roosevelt Jones (9.6 ppg, 6.0 apg) and Andrew Chrabascz (9.2 ppg) are also integral pieces.

The Hoyas pulled ahead by nine points midway through the second half in the semifinals only to allow Wisconsin to take control of the game with a 22-6 run. Down by three with time running out, D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera's potential game-tying 3-point attempt did not fall. Despite shooting an outstanding 53.2 percent form the field on the afternoon, the Hoyas allowed Wisconsin to nearly keep pace (.488) and they were outscored at the foul line, 20-9. Smith- Rivera's miss from beyond the arc in the waning seconds was his only missed 3- pointer on the day (5-of-6), as he finished with a game-high 29 points. Joshua Smith was the only other player in double figures with 10 points.

Georgetown has had plenty of offensive success this season. It shoots 50.9 percent from the field for 74.4 ppg, and its defensive effort has been stellar as well (.370, 64.6 ppg). Smith-Rivera (14.6 ppg, 3.8 apg) and Smith (14.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg) are neck-and-beck for the scoring lead. L.J. Peak also puts up double figures with 11.0 ppg.

Butler is a well-coached team and should come back strong from a lackluster performance on Thursday, but ultimately Georgetown's playmakers will be too much for the Bulldogs to handle.
