Recap: George Washington vs. DePaul
Washington, D.C. (SportsNetwork.com) - Patricio Garino netted a team-high 19 points the Colonials as George Washington downed the DePaul Blue Demons, 81-68, in a non-bracketed matchup in the Diamond Head Classic at the Smith Center.
Garino made 8-of-9 shots from the floor and also made an impact on the defensive end for the Colonials (6-2) with five steals and two blocks. Kevin Larsen contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, while Joe McDonald also scored 18 points.
Myke Henry led DePaul (6-2) with 22 points and tied Tommy Hamilton for a team- high with six boards. Jamee Crockett made good on 6-of-11 field goal attempts for 16 points and Billy Garrett provided 10 points to go along with four assists. The loss snapped the Blue Demons' four-game winning streak.
DePaul held its own in the early going and led, 12-11, with 13:28 remaining in the first half. However, the Colonials took control and outscored the visitors, 10-3, over the final 2:46 of the opening period to take a 42-22 lead into the intermission. GW outscored the Blue Demons, 28-6, in the paint and also, 12-2, in points off turnovers before the break.
The Blue Demons could not erase the deficit despite sinking 63 percent of their field goal tries over the final 20 minutes of the contest. GW overcame a 10-of-20 effort at the charity stripe in the second stanza to notch its third win in a row.
The Colonials enjoyed a 36-26 advantage in the rebounding battle.
