GEORGE WASHINGTON COLONIALS

George Washington Colonials

George Washington Colonials VS. Charlotte 49ers

Charlotte (4-3) vs. George Washington (4-2)

GAME NOTES: Having lost three of their past four games, the Charlotte 49ers will try to turn things around as they hit the road to take on the George Washington Colonials in a non-conference battle at the Verizon Center in the BB&T Classic.

Charlotte sports a 4-3 record on the season, but the 49ers have dropped three games in their past four after a 3-0 start to the new campaign. Charlotte is coming off a heartbreaking loss to Davidson, where the Wildcats and 49ers battled it out offensively in a 92-86 shootout.

George Washington started the season off at 2-0, but in the team's last four games the Colonials have gone 2-2 for the 4-2 mark entering this clash. GWU is coming off a win however, after the team took down UMBC handedly, 83-60, on Thursday night.

These two sides have met 26 times on the court in their series history, with George Washington holding the 15-11 all-time lead. The programs last met in D.C. back in the 2012-13 season, when the Colonials came away with a decisive 82-54 victory.

Both Charlotte and Davidson were on fire shooting the ball in their Wednesday night clash. Davidson netted 58.2 percent of its shots in the game, while Charlotte hit on 50.8 percent of its attempts, but included a sub-par 6-of-21 mark from 3-point distance. Six players scored in double figures for the 49ers in the loss, led by 17 points from Willie Clayton. Torin Dorn added 16 points, Pierria Henry chipped in 13 with eight assists, Terrence Williams and Keyshawn Woods each netted 12, and Mike Thorne Jr. contributed 10 points in the losing effort. The team was outdone from 3-point range, as Davidson connected on 14- of-30 from beyond the arc.

The big man Thorne leads the team in scoring and rebounding heading into the contest with George Washington. Thorne nets a team-best 14.1 ppg on 55.3 percent shooting with a 9.6 rpg average, also adding in seven blocked shots. Braxton Ogbueze contributes 12.3 ppg, for the 49ers, and Dorn rounds out a group of three players netting double digits with 10.4 ppg. Henry is just on the outside of that group looking in, netting 9.7 ppg with a team-best 37 assists on the season. Charlotte is scoring 75.4 ppg, and allowing 75.6 ppg to its opponents.

Although UMBC shot a respectable 43.8 percent from the floor against George Washington, the Retrievers fell to 0-7 on the season after the Colonials were able to hit on 44.9 percent of their tries from the floor. GWU grabbed a 46-34 lead at the half and never looked back, as Patricio Garino led the way with 23 points in the win for the Colonials, adding seven rebounds and four steals. Kevin Larsen chipped in with 14 points and six boards, while Joe McDonald netted seven points with a team-best five assists in the lopsided victory.

Garino and Kethan Savage, who had eight points against UMBC, share the throne for the top scoring spot on the team after six games this season. Garino and Savage are each netting 13.5 ppg for a Colonials squad that is scoring 72.0 ppg on 44.8 percent shooting from the floor. Larsen is just on the outside of the double-figure scoring club, netting 9.5 ppg. Not only does McDonald lead the team in rebounding (6.7 rpg), but he also has registered a team-best 28 assists. George Washington is holding opponents to just 56.0 ppg on 38.8 percent shooting, so Charlotte needs to bring its best offensive effort.

Through six games, the Colonials have proven they can be a very strong team defensively, although the Colonials have failed to pick up a win against a true quality opponent (wins over Grambling State, Rutgers, Longwood and UMBC). Charlotte will have to see a much better effort defensively if the team wants a shot at taking this game, which is essentially a home contest for the Colonials.
