Old Dominion (5-1) at George Mason (2-4)
GAME NOTES: A pair of former conference foes square off Wednesday at the Patriot Center as the George Mason Patriots host the Old Dominion Monarchs.
Both programs, which were once CAA members and will be meeting on the hardwood for the 56th time, are coming off dramatic victories.
George Mason was seconds away from suffering its fifth defeat of the season before a miracle shot by Jalen Jenkins stole a win away from Manhattan last Saturday.
Manhattan led by two after Shane Richards made the first of his two free throw attempts with three seconds remaining. Richards' second shot rimmed out, and Jenkins pulled down the rebound, took two steps and launched a 75-foot prayer the somehow found the bottom of the net to give the Patriots a stunning 64-63 victory.
Jenkins finished with 24 points and seven rebounds, while Patrick Holloway chipped in 18 points for George Mason, which out-rebounded Manhattan, 41-24, and also won the battle in the paint, 28-14.
Offense has been tough to come by for the Patriots, who have committed nearly twice as many turnovers (91) as assists (49) and are averaging only 61.7 ppg. Holloway and Jenkins are netting 16.0 and 10.0 ppg, respectively.
Shevon Thompson leads George Mason with 11.2 rpg to go with 9.7 ppg.
Following a solid third-place showing at the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam tournament, the Monarchs did themselves one better by knocking off No. 14 VCU, 73-67, last Saturday.
Aaron Bacote scored a career-high 31 points on a perfect shooting effort, as he connected on all eight of his field goal attempts and went 4-for-4 from 3- point range.
The Monarchs knocked down 9-of-17 attempts from beyond the arc to earn their first win over a ranked opponent since 2009.
Trey Freeman added 15 points in a game the Monarchs led virtually the entire way due to their marksmanship from the perimeter and ability to handle VCU's trademark pressure defense.
Defense has been ODU's speciality this season, as it gives up just 58.5 ppg on 38.6 percent field goal shooting. Freeman leads all scorers with 19.0 ppg, while Richard Ross is the only other double-digit scorer at an even 10.0.
This is ODU's first true road test, and the Monarchs have not won in the Patriot Center since the 2006-07 campaign. A letdown could be in the works coming off a win over a ranked opponent, but the Patriots don't have the firepower to keep pace.
