San Jose State (2-19) at Fresno State (10-12)
GAME NOTES: The miserable season for San Jose State continues as the Spartans take on the Fresno State Bulldogs in Mountain West Conference play at the Save Mart Center on Wednesday night.
The Spartans are not just all alone at the bottom of the league standings with a record of 0-9, the team is still awaiting that first win of the campaign against another Division I program. Outside of victories over Bethesda and St. Katherine, the Spartans have known nothing but disappointment. Since that victory against St. Kat's, SJSU has fallen in 11 straight outings, the most recent being a 67-41 setback to New Mexico on the road last Saturday.
As for the Bulldogs, who have carved out a space in sixth place in the MWC all for themselves, they have hit a bit of a rough patch in the schedule, losing two straight and three of the last four. Over the weekend Fresno State was bounced rather hard by Colorado State, 80-57, on the road in Fort Collins.
The all-time series between these Golden State foes favors the Bulldogs, 82-75, after FSU captured a 73-62 win in the first meeting of the season at the Event Center last month.
The Spartans dug themselves a considerable hole at WisePies Arena last Saturday as they converted just six field goals in the first half, shooting 3- of-16 behind the 3-point line. Overall, SJSU was limited to 25.0 percent accuracy from the floor as Rashad Muhammad tallied a team-best 15 points and Jaleel Williams registered a double-double consisting of 14 points and a game- high 10 rebounds in yet another losing cause.
Muhammad, who has scored in double figures in five straight appearances and 10 of the last 11, including 16 in the loss to Fresno State, is responsible for 13.6 ppg in conference action as he plays just over 37 minutes per contest. Williams chimes in with another 10.5 ppg, but he has shot only 34.1 percent from the field and an awful 19.6 percent (9-of-46) behind the 3-point line. As a group, the Spartans are producing a mere 46.7 ppg, while giving up 71.0 ppg, as they shoot a brutal 31.0 percent from the floor and 24.6 percent out on the perimeter.
Fresno State fell behind the Rams right out of the chute at Moby Arena and never recovered last Saturday, eventually shooting only 32.7 percent from the floor in the 23-point road loss. Cezar Guerrero, who continues to put together some solid outings off the bench, tied Marvelle Harris for the scoring lead with 16 points, the former shooting 3-of-5 behind the 3-point line as the rest of the team hit a combined 3-of-14.
Guerrero, who has appeared in relief in five league bouts, is tied for the second-best scoring option for the Bulldogs with his 11.8 ppg, matching the effort put forth by Paul Watson who is also the leader on the glass with 5.4 rpg. However, both players are shooting under 39.0 percent from the floor, bringing the entire unit down to only 39.8 percent. Harris continues to be the go-to guy on offense with his 19.3 ppg, but still this is a program putting up only 62.3 ppg.
At some point the Spartans might catch lightning in a bottle, but the planets would have to align and time come to a complete halt for them to have an opportunity to potentially find a way to win another game this season.
