Recap: Fresno State vs. Marist
Estero, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Chavaughn Lewis led all scorers with 28 points and Phillip Lawrence added 19 in Marist's 68-64 win over Fresno State in the Gulf Coast Showcase's seventh place game.
Lewis took 21 of Marist's 44 attempts from the field, making 10 of them, and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Lawrence was more efficient, hitting 5- of-8 from the field including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.
The first win of the season for the Red Foxes (1-4) comes on the heels of losses to Florida Gulf Coast and Hawaii in their previous two games of the tournament.
Marvelle Harris paced Fresno State (1-5) with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting, and Julien Lewis chipped in 14 with seven rebounds. Karachi Edo scored 13 points on 6-of-8 from the field for the Bulldogs.
The Red Foxes led the game by as many as 20 in the second half after taking a 33-22 advantage into the break, but a 10-0 run capped by the Bulldogs' Paul Watson cut the margin to 10 with under nine minutes to play.
Fresno State, which lost all three games in this tournament and has beaten only NJCAA Bristol University this season, pulled within two with 10 seconds left, but Marist's Manny Thomas hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 68-64 with five seconds left.
Marist only made two field goals in the final four minutes of the game, and needed Thomas to make three of his last four free throw attempts to seal the win. Thomas finished with 13 points.
