Manhattan (3-7) vs. Fordham (3-5)
GAME NOTES: The Manhattan Jaspers close out the non-conference portion of their schedule on Monday evening when they take on the Fordham Rams at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The matchup is the annual Battle of the Bronx, and Manhattan leads the all- time series, 55-51. This is only the second time these teams will play each other outside of the Bronx.
Fordham has been idle since suffering a 74-53 setback to St. John's last Sunday at Madison Square Garden. The Rams appeared out of their comfort zone in their first road game following a four-game homestand, and the result snapped a modest two-game win streak. They'll return to the Bronx for three straight after this contest.
Manhattan rallied late for a 73-69 home win over Morgan State on Saturday. It was a much needed victory for the Jaspers, who had dropped five of their previous six games. Still, they are just 1-7 outside of Draddy Gymnasium this season.
Manhattan's game against Morgan State featured 12 ties and 18 lead changes, and neither team led by more than six at any point. But a 12-4 Jaspers run to end the game turned out to be the difference. Shane Richards knocked down 4- of-6 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 20 points, while Emmy Andujar chipped in with 16 points, six assists and five rebounds. With Richards leading the charge, the Jaspers drained 9-of-20 (.450) threes for the game.
Richards also became the school's all-time 3-point leader (167) in the victory. He is second on the team in scoring this season with 11.8 points per game and has made 24 3-pointers (.348). Andujar is the top scorer and rebounder with 13.5 points and 7.5 boards per tilt. Ashton Pankey is also averaging double figures with 10.4 ppg and 6.3 rpg.
The Rams are a young team, with freshmen Eric Paschall (18.1 ppg, 5.9 rpg) and Chris Sengfelder (10.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg) drawing plenty of attention in the early going. Paschall is currently the Atlantic 10's leading scorer, and he and Sengfelder have combined to knock down 30 of the team's 53 3-pointers made to this point. Mandell Thomas is also averaging double figures with 12.9 ppg, while Ryan Rhoomes (7.6 ppg) is the A-10's No. 3 rebounder.
The Rams simply put up a dud against St. John's, as they shot just 38.8 percent from the floor and trailed by as many as 26. They also committed 20 turnovers and forced only eight, which yielded a huge 28-4 advantage for the Red Storm in points off turnovers. Paschall finished with a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds to pace three double-digit scorers for Fordham.
Fordham has had plenty of time to regroup from that loss, while Manhattan managed to win a tight game its last time out. Can the young Rams do the same if this one comes down to the wire?
