Dayton (12-2) at Fordham (5-8)
GAME NOTES: The Dayton Flyers aim for their sixth straight victory when they tangle with the Fordham Rams in Atlantic 10 Conference play at Rose Hill Gym.
The Flyers, who are seeking their first 3-0 start in league play since 2003-04, are coming off a 78-61 victory at St. Bonaventure on Thursday. In that game, Dayton made 14 shots from 3-point range, one short of the school record.
Fordham has dropped two in a row, including Wednesday's 68-65 decision at Rhode Island.
This bout marks the 31st meeting between Fordham and Dayton. The Flyers hold a 25-5 lead in the all-time series, including victories in the last nine matchups.
Dayton is flying high of late by averaging 78.0 points and 17.4 assists during the current winning streak. The Flyers have won 12 of their last 13 A-10 regular-season games. That includes the win over the Bonnies when Jordan Sibert scored 22 points to pace the Flyers. Dyshawn Pierre added 15 points and seven rebounds. Scoochie Smith contributed 14 points and five assists while Darrell Davis chipped in with 11 points. Dayton held a 42-9 scoring advantage from 3-point distance.
Dating back to last year, Dayton has not allowed a foe to score 70 or more points in 17 of its last 21 games. The Flyers have had amazing success this season without the benefit of size in their lineup as the tallest player is 6- foot-6 on the active roster. They are shooting 51.2 percent from the floor during the win streak. Their 3-point percentage is a solid .477 with 53 converted shots during the streak. For the season, the Flyers pace the conference in field goal percentage defense (.392) and rank third in the A-10 in scoring defense (59.8 ppg).
Sibert (16.1 ppg) leads the team in scoring and has 35 3-point field goals. Pierre (12.4 ppg, 6.4 rpg) is second on the team in scoring. Kendall Pollard (10.0 ppg), who was held to four points against the Bonnies, is shooting just 53 percent from the foul line.
All five of Fordham's wins this season have come at home, but the Rams lost on the road on Wednesday. Eric Paschall finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. Antwoine Anderson and Mandell Thomas provided 14 and 13 points, respectively in defeat.
Paschall (16.0 ppg), a freshman guard, is averaging 6.2 rpg. Thomas (13.3 ppg) is shooting just 37.2 percent from the field. Freshman forward Chris Sengfelder (11.2 ppg) is heating up over the past seven contests, averaging 13.1 ppg and 7.7 rpg while shooting 52.2 percent from the field. Anderson (8.8 ppg) and Ryan Rhoomes (7.8 ppg, 9.6 rpg) are also part of the starting lineup for a team that averages only 64.5 ppg. They are shooting just 28.9 percent from beyond the arc.
The Flyers have been playing lock-down defense and this game should be no different, especially against a team that is ranked 11th in the Atlantic 10 in scoring offense. Fordham is also next-to-last in field goal percentage offense (.415) and defense (.443). Expect the Flyers to find open spots on the floor for 3-pointers, which will doom the Rams.
