FLORIDA ST. SEMINOLES

Florida St. Seminoles

Florida St. Seminoles VS. UMass Minutemen

Massachusetts (3-1) vs. Florida State (1-2)

GAME NOTES: After losing Saturday matchups in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off, the Massachusetts Minutemen and Florida State Seminoles will square off Sunday in a consolation match at Mohegan Sun Arena in non- conference play.

UMass was 3-0 before its contest against Notre Dame Saturday, but the two offensive powers clashed on the court and the Irish were the ones who were too overwhelming. Notre Dame took down UMass, 81-68.

Florida State opened its season against Manhattan as part of a preliminary round matchup for the Tip-Off event, and won the contest in overtime. Since then, the Seminoles have dropped back-to-back contests with a Saturday loss to Providence, 80-54, the most recent.

Florida State and Massachusetts have played each other seven times, and Florida State owns the all-time series record, 4-3. They met as recently as last season, but the last Minutemen victory came in the 2004-05 campaign.

The Massachusetts defense certainly wasn't on display against Notre Dame Saturday in the team's 81-68 defeat. The Minutemen allowed the Fighting Irish to shoot a whopping 58.5 percent from the field, including 47.4 percent from 30point range. Derrick Gordon led the way for UMass with 18 points, while Cady Lalanne chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds, and Donte Clark finished the game with 10 points. The Minutemen shot 42.9 percent from the floor in the loss.

Lalanne and Maxie Esho are at the very top of the UMass scoring leaderboard, each netting 16.3 ppg through the first four contests. Although Massachusetts was only able to net 68 points against the Irish, the team is still scoring 77.8 ppg and sporting four players with double-digit scoring averages. Gordon chips in 15.5 ppg through four contests, and Trey Davis accounts for 14.0 ppg for the Minutemen. Lalanne's 10.5 rpg mark is a team best, which means the big man is averaging a double-double for UMass.

Talk about laying an egg. The Florida State team was devastated by Providence on Saturday as the Friars shot 53.7 percent from the floor and ran to an easy 26-point victory. Florida State shot just 27.3 percent in the first half, which buried the team for the rest of the night. Aaron Thomas netted 16 points in the loss for the Seminoles, while Montay Brandon netted 13 points and brought down seven rebounds. The team shot 39.1 percent from the floor in the entire contest.

Entering this weekend's slate of games, Thomas was the leading scorer for Florida State at 19.0 ppg. Things certainly didn't change for him after his 16-point effort, which means he's still atop the point scorers list for the Seminoles entering the game against UMass. Brandon entered Saturday's game against Providence as the team leader in rebounding, averaging 6.0 rpg. In three games this season, Florida State is averaging just 70.3 ppg, which will need to change if the team wants to remain competitive in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Both teams were demoralized by their opponents on Saturday, proving to be completely outmatched on both ends of the floor. But UMass has shown plenty of promise in the team's four games, with a handful of scorers that can get the job done. Florida State, on the other hand, has a scorer in Thomas and not much else.
