South Florida (5-5) vs. Florida State (5-5)
GAME NOTES: The South Florida Bulls will try to put an end to their recent slide when they take on the Florida State Seminoles in the Orange Bowl Classic at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida.
South Florida has gone 0-4 in the month of December after jumping out to a 5-1 start. The Bulls were in action just two nights ago as they suffered an 89-69 home loss to Seton Hall. Following this tilt, they'll return to Tampa for two straight and four of their next five games leading into Big East play.
Florida State has split its last four games but is coming off Wednesday's 93-77 triumph over North Florida. The Seminoles will host Stetson on Monday night before an eight-day hiatus from game action.
FSU leads the head-to-head series, 20-12. These teams last met in 2007.
The Bulls missed all nine of their 3-point attempts Thursday night against Seton Hall. They also allowed the Pirates to shoot 54 percent from the floor, including 11-of-20 from the perimeter. Still, the Bulls did have a season-high 20 assists, and they turned the ball over just 10 times, including once in the first half. Anthony Collins, who ranks 10th in the nation with 6.6 assists per game, dished out 10. Down low, sophomore Chris Perry scored 16 points to go along with eight rebounds, and freshman center Ruben Guerrero finished with a career-high 13 points. Corey Allen, Jr., the reigning AAC Player of the Week, was held to just eight points on 1-of-9 shooting from the floor.
For FSU, Montay Brandon (14.5 ppg) and Xavier Rathan-Mayes (11.8 ppg) are both averaging double figures. Brandon has been particularly effective with his looks, as he is shooting 61 percent from the floor and also averaging a team- best 5.8 rebounds. However, leading scorer Aaron Thomas (14.8 ppg) was ruled ineligible last week and is out for the rest of the season.
Brandon picked up the slack against North Florida with a game-high 24 points and eight assists. Kiel Turpin provided a spark with 19 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Phil Cofer contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, while Rathan-Mayes finished with 11 points and nine assists. The Seminoles had 25 assists on 34 field goals and shot 58.6 percent for the game.
The Bulls have been scuffling of late on both ends of the floor. They face a tough challenge here on the road against a Florida State squad that is adept at distributing the basketball for open looks.
