Clemson (13-8) at Florida State (12-10)
GAME NOTES: The Florida State Seminoles take aim at their third win in a row as they welcome the Clemson Tigers to the Donald L. Tucker Center for ACC action on Wednesday.
The Tigers come in on a three-game winning streak after their 64-49 victory over Boston College on Saturday. Clemson improved to 13-8 overall and went one game above the .500 mark in league play with the win. Coach Brad Brownell's team outrebounded Boston College, 37-27, and converted 13-of-14 attempts at the free-throw line in the contest. Jordan Roper tallied a team-high 24 points after he sank 6-of-8 tries from 3-point range. Jaron Blossomgame contributed 16 points.
The Seminoles were successful in the first two stages of their season-long three-game homestand, downing Wake Forest (82-76) in double-overtime before Sunday's 55-54 win over Miami-Florida. One more triumph would rise FSU to a .500 record in league play for the first time since Jan. 6. Coach Leonard Hamilton's team hit on 49.5 percent of its field goal attempts and 73.8 percent of its free-throw tries during the winning stream. Montay Brandon paced the Seminoles versus the Hurricanes with 18 points, six rebounds and three steals.
This will be the second meeting this season and 66th in history between these schools. FSU owns a 36-29 all-time series lead thanks to its 59-55 win over the Tigers at Littlejohn Coliseum on Jan. 19. The Seminoles have won six of the last seven games against Clemson, including three of the last four played at the Tucker Center.
Clemson's bench has played a huge role in its success. The Tigers are 8-1 on the season when their reserves outscore the opposition's bench, including a 5-1 mark in ACC play. The Tigers are ranked last in the ACC in scoring offense at 63.1 ppg, but have the third best scoring defense average (60.7 ppg) in the league. Blossomgame is averaging team-highs of 13.1 points and 8.1 rebounds. Roper has produced 18 ppg and connected on 10 attempts from behind the 3-point line over the span of his last three games. The 6-foot-2 junior guard was held to two points on 1-of-7 shooting from the field by FSU earlier this season. Rod Hall led Clemson with 12 points and three assists against the Seminoles.
FSU managed to survive its bout with then No. 23 Miami despite a poor showing by Xavier Rathan-Mayes and Devon Bookert, who were contained by the Hurricanes' guards. Bookert (10.2 ppg) was held scoreless, while Rathan-Mayes (13.8 ppg) finished with only five points on 2-of-7 shooting from the floor. Rathan-Mayes has established himself as one of the premier rookies in the final week of January with 56 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists in a two- game span. The freshman guard is ranked sixth in ACC play in assists with 4.6 per outing.
Clemson and Florida State rank last and second to last, respectively, in the ACC in assist-to-turnover ratio. The Tigers are 6-1 when winning the turnover battle. The Tigers were limited to 34 percent efficiency from the floor in the first meeting. Rathan-Mayes came up one assist shy of a double-double in his inaugural encounter with Clemson. FSU's homecourt advantage should give it a slight edge, but this will most likely be a hard-fought battle that goes down to the wire.
