FLORIDA ST. SEMINOLES

Florida St. Seminoles

Florida St. Seminoles VS. Central Florida Knights

UCF (5-1) at Florida State (3-4)

GAME NOTES: UCF plays its first road game of the season on Saturday when the Knights visit the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center seeking their first-ever win over the Florida State Seminoles.

UCF took advantage of playing its first six games on its home floor by winning five of them, including a close 61-59 victory over Georgia Southern on Tuesday.

Kasey Wilson put in the go-ahead tip-in with 29 seconds to play in regulation, and Jelani Hewitt missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer. Justin McBride tallied 14 points and seven boards, and Adonys Henriquez contributed 11 points and four assists for the victors.

The Knights' bench outscored GSU's reserves, 29-11, and it's been that kind of balanced scoring that has gotten UCF off to a 5-1 start.

Eight players average between 6.5 and 12.8 ppg, with B.J. Taylor leading all scorers in the four games he has played. Taylor has missed the last two games with a sprained ankle, however, and it's still up in the air as to whether the freshman guard will suit up on Saturday.

Henriquez is certainly capable of stepping up in his absence, as he is hitting 53.2 percent of his shots and logging 11.7 ppg. Brandon Goodwin is the team's facilitator at the offensive end and boasts nearly a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio (30-to-13).

Mistakes did in the Seminoles last Monday, as they committed 17 turnovers in a 70-65 setback to Nebraska. Xavier Rathan-Mayes was accountable for seven of the giveaways, although he did lead the team in scoring with 17 points. Aaron Thomas netted 11 points and Boris Bojanovsky logged a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Seminoles, who have also lost to Northeastern, Providence and Massachusetts, nearly rallied in the second half after digging itself a 16- point hole at the break, but they ultimately came up short.

Rathan-Mayes has paced FSU in scoring in each of the last four games to up his season average to a team-best 14.3 ppg. Thomas is sitting at 13.4 ppg, and Montay Brandon checks in with 12.0 ppg.

Perimeter shooting has certainly hurt the Seminoles in the early going, as they are hitting on just 19.8 percent (17-of-86) of their 3-point attempts while opponents have made 53 treys.

Florida State has won all 10 meetings against UCF, including an 80-68 decision last season on the Knights' home court, and UCF is officially 1-17 against teams from the ACC. That said, these two teams are playing at different levels right now, and even if Taylor is unable to go for the Knights, they should have enough options to steal a rare win over their in-state opponent.
