San Francisco (3-0) vs. Florida Gulf Coast (4-0)
GAME NOTES: The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles and the San Francisco Dons were both victorious Monday in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Showcase, and they'll now face off in a non-conference clash at Germain Arena on Tuesday.
Florida Gulf Coast is looking to continue its unbeaten streak and extend it to five games with this matchup against the Dons. FGCU easily handled Marist on Monday, 58-43, in the first round of the tournament in Estero, Florida.
San Francisco has an unblemished record of its own it would like to maintain, currently sitting at 3-0. The Dons defeated South Carolina State and Notre Dame de Namur to open the season, and then beat Hawaii Monday, 88-73, in a commanding victory.
Once again, Florida Gulf Coast had an outstanding offensive performance, and this time it was Marist receiving the full brunt force of Dunk City. The Eagles shot 41.5 percent from the field in the win Monday, as four FGCU players netted scoring totals in double digits. Julian DeBose led all Florida Gulf Coast scorers with 15 points in the contest, while Marc-Eddy Norelia chipped in with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Brett Comer had a solid day all-around, scoring 11 with six rebounds and five assists in the win, while Bernard Thompson contributed 11 points of his own. The team was actually kind of cold from shooting beyond the arc, netting just 4-of-14 shots from 3-point distance.
Five players for FGCU are averaging scoring figures in double digits, which is a huge reason the Eagles are netting over 70 points per outing. Thompson leads the pack with 16.3 ppg, while DeBose, who played his first game for Florida Gulf Coast Monday, naturally has a 15 ppg mark. Toss in Jamail Jones's 14.0 ppg average and Norelia's 13.0 ppg, and the team's scoring starts to come together. Both Jones and Norelia own team-best 9.0 rpg averages as well. The Comer rounds out the double-digit scorers with 12.5 ppg, adding in a ridiculous 9.3 apg.
Talk about the tale of two different halves for San Francisco on Monday, as the Dons were able to kick things into overdrive in the second half en route to a 15-point victory over Hawaii. San Francisco shot 33.4 percent from the floor in the first frame, then went ahead and netted 66.7 percent of its shot tries in the second to pull away ahead. Tim Derksen scored a San Fran-best 21 points, while Kruize Pinkins tallied a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Matt Glover chipped in with 15 points and Mark Tollefsen added 11 points in the win, while each player brought down eight boards.
Pinkins has proven to e a very reliable scorer for the Dons in three games this season, leading the team with an impressive 20.3 ppg average and a 10.3 ppg mark. Derksen trailed Pinkins by a considerable margin in terms of scoring average, but Derksen checks in at second with 15.3 ppg, also notching a team- best 10 assists. Tollefsen rounds out the double-digit scorers on the Dons' roster with 11.7 ppg, all for a squad averaging a whopping 88.3 ppg while giving up only 57.0 ppg.
This contest will truly be a clash of the titans, as Florida Gulf Coast's offense will be ready to go for another round, while San Francisco's gaudy offensive stats should protect the team just fine. FGCU doesn't get a home game per se, but the team's Fort Myers campus is only about 20 miles from the Germain Arena, so it might as well be in front of the home crowd. San Fran is tough, and if the team can get the usual offensive production they will be hard to beat.
