FLORIDA GATORS

Florida Gators

Florida Gators VS. Connecticut Huskies

Connecticut (6-5) at Florida (7-5)

GAME NOTES: The Florida Gators saw a four-game win streak come to an end in their last outing, but before conference play starts up they will host the Connecticut Huskies in a non-conference battle at the O'Connell Center.

Florida comes into the contest sporting a 7-5 record on the season not even a year after making it to the Final Four. The Gators dropped the contest to the eventual champion Huskies, who they will meet on the court for the first time since that Final Four meeting.

UConn hasn't been nearly as sharp this season, owning a 6-5 record with losses spread throughout the team's schedule. The Huskies are coming off an overtime defeat at the hands of Temple, 57-53, in the team's American Athletic Conference opener.

This will be just the fourth matchup all-time between the Gators and Huskies, with the most recent obviously being the 2014 Final Four game, in which Connecticut won, 63-53. UConn owns the 2-1 series advantage over Florida.

Both Temple and UConn weren't very adept at shooting the ball in the Huskies' last outing. Connecticut finished the overtime contest shooting just 38.6 percent from the floor, while Temple hit on 31.6 percent. In the extra session, UConn shot 1-of-5, and Temple made 1-of-8, although the Owls did connect on 4-of-4 from the free-throw line to earn the victory. Amida Brimah scored 12 points to lead UConn, while Daniel Hamilton tallied a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Kentan Facey grabbed 11 boards in the loss.

Temple did a stellar job at making sure UConn leading scorer, Ryan Boatright (17.6 ppg), was accounted for in the limited number of minutes he was on the floor. The Huskies' leader on offense was held to just two points in the overtime loss, but he only logged 17 minutes after bruising his left thigh. He is questionable to play in this game. Brimah checks in behind Boatright in the scoring department, averaging 12.2 ppg, followed up by Hamilton's 11.1 ppg mark. The Huskies are netting 68.0 ppg this season, and are holding opponents to just 61.2 ppg defensively on 38.8 percent shooting. Facey's 7.0 rpg is the best average on the team this season.

Florida battled in-state rival Florida State in its last contest, and lost in the most heartbreaking fashion. At the buzzer, a Devon Bookert shot for the Seminoles fell short, but Florida's Jake Kurtz knocked the rebound attempt into the basket, which allowed FSU to take a two-point victory in the final seconds. Kasey Hill scored 17 points to lead the team, and Dorian Finney-Smith chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds in the contest. Michael Frazier II tallied 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Gators.

Frazier finished as the team's third-leading scorer against Florida State, but he comes into this contest against UConn as the Gators' best scoring option. Frazier tops Florida with 14.6 ppg on 44.4 percent shooting, followed up by Finney-Smith's 12.8 ppg mark. Jon Horford owns a team-best 6.1 rpg, and is the next closest to double figures in scoring at 8.8 ppg. Florida's scoring defense has been rock solid, limiting opponents to 56.2 ppg on just 38.7 percent shooting. Hill has taken over the role of point guard, and has dished out 53 assists to lead the team so far.

Florida will be looking to distance itself from the gut-wrenching way the Gators lost to FSU. UConn may have a hard time finding reliable scoring outlets if Boatright is limited in any way, or can't suit up to play altogether.
