Eastern Kentucky (6-4) at Florida Atlantic (5-4)
GAME NOTES: The Florida Atlantic Owls had a four-game win streak snapped in their last outing and will attempt to get back in the win column Monday as they entertain the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in a non-conference clash at FAU Arena.
Eastern Kentucky has won two of its last three outings, including a huge 72-44 victory over Miami-Florida on Friday in Miami. The Colonels are 6-4 this season, and sport a 3-2 road record as they get set for the second matchup in a three-game road trip.
FAU was on a four-game win streak before the team hit the road up to Brooklyn to take on St. Francis-Brooklyn. The Owls fell in that contest, 61-56, which dropped the team back to 5-4 on the young campaign.
This is the first time in history that these team clash head-to-head on the hardwood.
Eastern Kentucky pulled off the upset of Miami on Friday by maintaining a strong first half offensively, which allowed the Colonels to take a 27-25 lead into the intermission. It was in the second half that EKU exploded, as the Colonels made 60.7 percent of their shots from the floor and held the Hurricanes to 27.3 percent shooting in the same frame. Corey Walden netted 18 points to pace the team, adding in five rebounds. Timmy Knipp chipped in 13 points in the win, Eric Stutz added 13 with nine rebounds, and Isaac McGlone contributed 12 points off the bench.
The Colonels, who represented the Ohio Valley Conference in the NCAA Tournament last season after defeating powerful Belmont in the conference title game, have been up to their old tricks offensively this season. EKU enters this clash netting 77.5 ppg on 44.6 percent shooting, and also holding opponents to 61.7 ppg in the same span. Walden tops the team in scoring with a 17.3 ppg mark, ahead of the forward Stutz, who chips in 13.0 ppg on 61.3 percent shooting with 6.0 rpg. Ja'Mill Powell rounds out the trio of double- digit scorers for the Colonels at 10.4 ppg.
Florida Atlantic and St. Francis Brooklyn each connected on 38.9 percent of their shots in the Owls' last outing, but it was Brooklyn that made 18-of-26 from the free-throw line, compared to nine makes for FAU, that allowed the home squad to down the visitors. Marquan Botley tallied 12 points to lead the team, while Solomon Poole chipped in with 10 points. Each player turned the ball over four times in the defeat.
Since returning to the team two games ago, Poole has provided an offensive boost for the Owls, netting 16.5 ppg. But Botley (12.2 ppg) and Jackson Trapp (10.8 ppg) are the top two scorers for FAU that have been present this whole season. Kelvin Penn provides a strong presence down low for the Owls, as he enters the upcoming matchup with a 5.7 rpg mark and 21 blocked shots - both team highs. FAU is scoring 61.9 ppg this season on 42.3 percent shooting, but the team is holding opponents to just 59.4 ppg defensively.
FAU holds a 4-0 mark at home this season, but the level of competition (aside from a clash with East Carolina) has been pretty low. Eastern Kentucky's 28- point win over Miami may have signaled an upswing for the Colonels this season, but this road test against the Owls will truly decide whether that is so.
