Recap: FIU vs. Marshall
Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Dennis Mavin scored 19 points as the FIU Panthers defeated the Marshall Thundering Herd in overtime, 66-62, in a Conference USA bout at FIU Arena.
Mavin, who shot 6-of-13 from the floor and 7-of-10 at the free-throw line, was also charged with seven of his team's 16 turnovers on the night. Adrian Diaz added 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Panthers (9-8, 2-2 C- USA). Daviyon Draper and Dominique Williams both contributed 10 points and seven rebounds as the team snapped a two-game slide.
As for the Thundering Herd (4-13, 0-4), Justin Edmonds scored 15 points, Ryan Taylor added 14 and 11 rebounds and Austin Loop contributed 11 points.
In the first half the Panthers shot 36.4 percent from the field but was 0-of-5 from beyond the arc. The Thundering Herd converted 41.4 percent from the field, including an impressive 10-of-20 from 3-point range, as they took a 36-21 lead at the break.
Marshall shot just 27.3 percent from the field in the second half. FIU connected on 56.5 percent from the field and opened the frame on a 12-2 run, but still the game went to overtime knotted at 59-59.
In the extra session the Panthers were limited to a mere three points, allowing Marshall to pull away for the victory.
FIU outscored Marshall 36-16 in the paint, but the Herd outrebounded the Panthers, 49-38, the visitors coming up with a staggering 20 offensive boards.
