Recap: Eastern Ky vs. UT Martin
Richmond, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - A 3-pointer by Marshun Newell in the final seconds pushed the Skyhawks of UT Martin to a 70-69 win over the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at McBrayer Arena.
Newell finished with 16 points as he knocked down 4-of-8 shots from 3-point range for the Skyhawks (21-12), trailing Twymond Howard who tallied 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor overall. Alex Anderson pitched in with 14 points as he too made good on four attempts from beyond the arc on the night, followed by Javier Martinez with 11 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor off the bench.
UT Martin is now into the semifinals of the tournament and will face an opponent to be determined on Tuesday, with the title game in the event set for two days later.
Corey Walden led the Colonels (21-12) with 21 points, hitting on 5-of-9 from long range, followed by Timmy Knipp with 15 points as he made 5-of-10 on the perimeter for the hosts. Eric Stutz tacked on 10 points.
Thanks to an impressive 60.9 percent shooting from the field in the first half the Skyhawks led by as many as 15 points in the period, but EKU closed the gap to only six points at the break, 36-30.
The momentum moved in favor of the Colonels who managed to build a seven-point edge with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation, but the team was held without a point for the final 1:23 of the meeting, opening the door for Newell to play the hero.
UT Martin survived 17 turnovers, compared to just seven miscues by Eastern Kentucky, by mounting a hefty 43-19 advantage on the glass, limiting the host a mere three offensive rebounds on the night.
These two members of the Ohio Valley Conference met this season in early January, with the Colonels overcoming an eight-point second-half deficit at UT-Martin to earn a 66-58 victory. With that win, EKU moved out to a 27-16 edge in the series, including an 18-4 advantage at home prior to tonight's meeting.
