Recap: Eastern Ky vs. High Point
Richmond, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Walden's layup with 15 seconds remaining lifted the Eastern Kentucky Colonels past the High Point Panthers, 66-65, in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at McBrayer Arena.
Walden paced the Colonels (21-11) with 19 points, adding in seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Eric Stutz tallied a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Isaac McGlone chipped in 14 points in the win.
The Colonels advance to the third round of the tournament, and will await their next opponent.
John Brown netted 23 points with eight rebounds to pace the Panthers (23-10), while Devante Wallace came off the bench to add 13 points. Lorenzo Cugini nearly contributed a double-double, scoring nine with 13 rebounds in the loss.
Eastern Kentucky connected on 41.9 percent of its first-half field goal tries, and made 8-of-14 from 3-point range to grab a 34-29 advantage at the intermission. High Point shot just 37 percent from the floor in the opening frame, and made only 2-of-9 from distance.
The Colonels increased their accuracy to 52 percent shooting in the second half, but the Panthers were even hotter, making 56.5 percent of their attempts from the floor to make a comeback bid. They held a one-point advantage after a pair of Cugini free throws with 51 seconds to play, but that was erased with Walden's final layup.
Eastern Kentucky held a 15-8 advantage in points scored off turnovers, and outscored High Point from beyond the arc in the win, 39-18. The Panthers held a 13-1 edge in made free throws in the loss.
