Recap: East Carolina vs. Hawaii
Estero, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Garrett Nevels scored 19 points, and Aaron Valdes chipped in 15 to lead Hawaii to a 75-73 win over East Carolina in the Gulf Coast Showcase fifth place game.
Both players pulled down nine rebounds for the Rainbow Warriors (6-2), who enjoyed a sizable 41-29 edge on the glass over the Pirates (3-3).
Hawaii earlier beat Marist on Tuesday to finish 2-1 in the tournament and give the team four wins in its last five games.
B.J. Tyson paced ECU with a game-high 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting, while Caleb White added 16 with eight rebounds. The Pirates dropped two of three games in the tournament, only beating Fresno State.
An 8-0 run in the last three minutes of the first half gave Hawaii a 38-29 lead at the break. Nevels scored the final five points of the run.
The Rainbow Warriors led by as much as 11 in the second period, but the Pirates had a great half from the floor. Tyson scored 13 points during an 18-8 second run that actually gave ECU a 56-54 lead, but it was short-lived. A Nevels jumper a minute later re-tied the game, and his tip-in the next possession started a 10-3 Hawaii run that put the game away.
The Pirates would close the deficit as the final buzzer approached, but Roderick Bobbitt hit 3-of-4 attempts from the line in the final 15 seconds to secure the win.
Bobbitt finished with 10 points, six boards and a game-high six assists for Hawaii.
