Estero, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - B.J. Tyson scored 22 points and Caleb White added 16, as East Carolina built a big lead and held on for a 58-52 win over Fresno State in the consolation round of the Gulf Coast Showcase.

Tyson and White entered the tournament as the Pirates' leading scorers, but combined for just 10 points in Monday's loss to Green Bay. The duo got back on track Tuesday, combining to make 11-of-20 shots. Michael Zangari contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds for East Carolina (3-2) in Tuesday's victory.

Julien Lewis scored a game-high 23 points for Fresno State (1-4), which lost to Evansville in its tournament opener on Monday.

A 3-pointer by Lewis gave Fresno State a 14-12 lead in the first half, but the Pirates followed with a 17-2 run. White scored seven and Tyson added five during the burst, which gave East Carolina a 29-16 advantage en route to a 31-22 margin at the break.

The Pirates still held a double-digit edge at 44-33 with 10 1/2 minutes left, but Fresno State chipped away and pulled within 50-48 on a layup by Lewis with just over three minutes to play. The Bulldogs had two chances to move in front over the next two minutes, but Paul Watson and Lewis each missed shots from beyond the arc.

Tyson then hit two from the stripe with 1:09 remaining and added a layup after another missed Fresno State three to expand the lead to six. The Pirates sealed it at the line from there.

Wednesday, the Pirates will take on Hawaii after the Rainbow Warriors topped Marist Tuesday.
