St. Bonaventure (10-6) at Duquesne (6-10)
GAME NOTES: Looking to build on a two-game winning streak, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies will hit the road for an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup with the Duquesne Dukes Thursday at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
St. Bonaventure has taken two consecutive contests over George Mason (75-55) and Saint Joseph's (70-61) to improve to 10-6 on the season. The Bonnies are an even 3-3 away from home, and own a 3-2 conference mark heading into Thursday's clash.
Duquesne hasn't been nearly as productive this season, having lost three straight decisions to fall to 6-10 on the season. The Dukes dropped a close contest to VCU on Saturday, 70-64, which set Duquesne back to 1-4 in the Atlantic 10. Five of the team's six wins this season have come at home, though.
This will be the 113th meeting between St. Bonaventure and Duquesne in the all-time series. The Dukes own the series advantage over the Bonnies, 58-54. In games played in Pittsburgh, Duquesne holds a 39-15 lead.
St. Bonaventure found itself down by a single point, 29-28, to Saint Joseph's at halftime on Sunday. But the Bonnies exploded offensively in the second half behind 59.1 percent shooting to erase the slim deficit and claim a nine-point victory over the Hawks. Marcus Posley led the way for St. Bonaventure in the win, netting 23 points with a 5-of-10 shooting mark from 3-point range. Youssou Ndoye chipped in with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists in the win, and Dion Wright added 14 points for the Bonnies.
For the most part, offense hasn't been an issue this season for St. Bonaventure, which averages 69.2 ppg thanks to the effort of five double-digit scorers on the squad. Posley leads the Bonnies and the A-10, averaging 17.4 ppg. He is followed by Wright's 12.1 ppg. Wright adds in 7.1 rpg, which is second on the squad behind Ndoye's 10.7 rpg (second in the conference). Ndoye is third on the team in scoring, completing the double-double average with 11.7 ppg. Andell Cumberbatch (10.8 ppg) and Jaylen Adams (10.5 ppg) round out the group of double-digit scorers for St. Bonaventure. But the drop off is noticeable to the next-highest scorer, who averages just 3.1 ppg.
If it weren't for a poor first half offensively for Duquesne against VCU, the Dukes may not have suffered their third straight A-10 loss on Saturday. Duquesne trailed VCU at halftime, 40-26, and made a valiant comeback effort in the second period, but still came up just short. Derrick Colter scored 14 points to lead the team, while Dominique McKoy added 12 points and six rebounds. L.G. Gill came off the bench to tally 11 points with seven boards in the defeat to round out the double-digit scorers for the Dukes.
Even though Duquesne only has two double-figure scorers this season in Colter (12.5 ppg) and Micah Mason (10.6 ppg), the Dukes still average more points per outing than St. Bonaventure at 70.9 ppg. The big issue for the Dukes is a weak scoring defense which allows 70.8 ppg to opponents - ranked second to last in the Atlantic 10. Colter has dished out 52 assists this season to lead the team, and McKoy pulls down a team-leading 5.2 boards per contest. At 5-5 at home this season, the Dukes homecourt advantage is almost non-existent.
St. Bonaventure simply has to limit the Dukes in their scoring efforts by containing Colter and Mason, and the Bonnies should be able to score at will against a porous Duquesne defense, even in Pittsburgh.
St. Bonaventure 73, Duquesne 65
