UNC Wilmington (6-16) at Drexel (11-10)
GAME NOTES: The only team in the Colonial Athletic Association without a victory in league play gives it another try tonight, as the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington hit the floor against the Drexel Dragons in Philadelphia.
The Seahawks have come up empty in seven CAA bouts thus far and have a total of six wins to their credit overall. The team enters the week tied for the most overall defeats in the conference with Hofstra at 16, following a 66-65 setback to Delaware on the road this past Saturday. The squad has now fallen in 11 straight decisions.
As for the Dragons, they too were in action on the first of the month and got caught up in a close game, not to mention coming out on the short end just like the Seahawks as they allowed Towson to claim a 75-73 win in Maryland. The loss was the third in the last four games for Drexel, the one victory being a narrow 77-74 final versus Hofstra on Wednesday night.
The Dragons won the first meeting of the season a little over two weeks ago, posting a 79-63 victory at Trask Coliseum. Frantz Massenat erupted for 30 points and eight assists for the visitors, followed by Freddie Wilson and Chris Fouch with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
The Seahawks, who still lead the all-time series by a 12-10 margin, were paced by Craig Ponder with 16 points, Chris Dixon 13 and Cedrick Williams 11 points, as the hosts shot only 4-of-15 behind the 3-point line and 13-of-24 at the charity stripe.
UNCW led by as many as eight points in the second half against a Delaware team that was missing a key member on Saturday, but in the final moments the Seahawks couldn't get over the hump in the one-point outcome. Cedrick Williams scored 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds before fouling out, followed by Addison Spruill with 16 points off the bench at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark. Defensively, the visitors held the Blue Hens to just 34.5 percent shooting from the floor, including 5-of-19 beyond the arc.
The leading scorer for the Seahawks in each of the last two games, Williams is responsible for 14.4 ppg and is also tops on the glass with 7.2 rpg, while generating 37 blocked shots which is also first on the roster. Spruill pitches in with 10.3 ppg, the only other double-digit scorer, but in his case he is shooting just 35.4 percent from the field and 23.4 percent beyond the arc, the latter bringing the team down to just 25.2 percent.
While the final score indicates a close game, for the most part the meeting with Towson was controlled by the Tigers over the weekend. Massenat led four in double figures with 18 points, followed by Tavon Allen and Kazembe Abif with 17 and 16, respectively, but Fouch tallied only 10 points as he shot 3- of-13 from the floor and 1-of-6 beyond the arc. As a team, the Dragons were only 4-of-12 out on the perimeter.
The effort by Fouch, at least in terms of the final results, were quite lacking when you consider he leads the Dragons in scoring with 18.4 ppg. Then again, Fouch is far from an accurate shooter as he hits only 39.8 percent of his field goal tries and 31.9 percent of his 160 3-point launches. Massenat checks in with 17.9 ppg and is first with 111 of the unit's 268 assists through 21 contests.
Both of these teams need to learn how to finish off close games in a positive manner, but considering the Seahawks have been unable to win in any capacity for more than a month means Drexel is closer to making that happen.
