Recap: Detroit vs. Youngstown St
Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 21 points and nine rebounds by Chris Jenkins, the fifth-seeded Detroit Titans defeated the eighth-seeded Youngstown State Penguins, 77-67, in first-round action of the Horizon League Tournament at Calihan Hall.
For the Titans (15-17), Juwan Howard Jr. added 20 points and Paris Bass finished with 11 points and three blocked shots. The Titans now take on the fourth-seeded Cleveland State Vikings in the second round on Friday night.
Bobby Hain paced the Penguins (11-21) with 14 points, while Shawn Amiker posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, Marcus Keene also finished with 12 points, and DJ Cole chipped in with 11 points.
The Penguins took a 37-31 lead at the break after shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half, including 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Titans struggled from the floor in the opening period, making just 35.7 percent of their field goal tries, including 4-of-12 from 3-point range.
Detroit heated up in the second half, knocking down 58.6 percent of its shots from the field, including 2-of-5 from 3-point distance. Trailing 65-63 with under five minutes to play, the Titans scored 14 straight points to pull away from the Penguins and seal the comeback victory.
Detroit got huge production from its bench, scoring 54 points to just 11 for Youngstown State's reserves. The Penguins scored 17 points off of 10 Titans turnovers.
