South Florida (5-2) at Detroit (5-3)
GAME NOTES: The Detroit Titans will try to secure their second win during a four-game homestand when they entertain the South Florida Bulls on Saturday afternoon.
The Titans easily handled Aquinas College last Monday (109-59), and have now won four out of their last five games putting them at 5-3 on the season. However, Detroit has yet to defeat a Division I team with a winning record.
South Florida lost for just the second time this season as it fell at Alabama on Tuesday night, 82-71. Prior to that defeat, the Bulls had won two consecutive home games against Hofstra and Jacksonville. USF now sits at 5-2.
This will be just the second meeting between these two programs. Last season, the Titans traveled to South Florida and escaped with a narrow 65-60 victory.
Detroit had six players score in double figures in its recent victory over the Aquinas College Saints. Juwan Howard Jr. led the way with 20 points, while Brandon Kearney had a career-high 17 points and Paris Bass made a strong showing with 17 points, nine rebounds and five steals. The Titans shot an impressive 60.3 percent from the field, including 54.4 percent from beyond the arc. Detroit played great defense, forcing a season-high 23 turnovers which it turned into 35 points.
Howard Jr. has been an important piece for the Titans success this season, as his 19.0 ppg places him second in the Horizon League for scoring. Bass, just a freshman, has been enjoying a solid campaign, averaging 12.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, and he has logged eight blocked shots. Anton Wilson is the third Titan averaging double digits (12.4 ppg). Detroit is shooting a respectable 45.8 percent from the floor.
In its second loss this season, South Florida received a solid outing from Corey Allen Jr., who scored 16 points in the defeat to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Other Bulls to reach double figures were Nehemias Morillo (13 points) and Chris Perry (11 points). Perry also pulled down eight rebounds. South Florida shot 50 percent from the field, but only connected on nine of its 19 free throw attempts. The Bulls also turned the ball over far too often in Tuscaloosa, as their 25 turnovers led to 26 points for Alabama.
Along with leading the Bulls in scoring, Allen Jr. is also third in scoring among all players in the American Athletic Conference with 15.9 ppg. Perry (13.4 ppg) and Morillo (11.7 ppg) are the other two players averaging double digits for USF. Both players are also averaging more than six rebounds per game. As a team, the Bulls are currently converting 49.5 percent of their tries from the field, but that includes just a 33.3 percent effort from 3- point range. South Florida has played good defense to this point, limiting opponents to a .377 field goal percentage while swatting an average of 5.7 shots per game.
Detroit appears to have a better team than last season with Howard Jr. netting close to 20 points per game and the offense shooting the ball well overall. But the Titans are taking on a South Florida squad that held the 6-1 NC State Wolfpack to just 37.3 percent accuracy on their field goal attempts. The Titans certainly aren't going to be dropping 109 points on a Bulls team that doesn't want to lose back-to-back games for the first time this season.
