Recap: DePaul vs. Xavier
Rosemont, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Garrett recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists as the DePaul Blue Demons held on for a 71-68 victory over the Xavier Musketeers in a Big East Conference thriller at Allstate Arena.
Forrest Robinson scored a team-high 17 points for DePaul (8-7, 2-0 Big East), which has now won two games in a row after losing six straight. Jamee Crockett added 10 points and Garrett grabbed five rebounds.
Trevon Bluiett notched a double-double for the Musketeers (10-4, 1-1) with 19 points and 12 boards. Myles Davis provided a spark off the bench with 14 points, Dee Davis handed out seven assists and Matt Stainbrook pulled down eight rebounds.
Xavier took a 28-26 lead into halftime after it converted 9-of-11 shots at the free-throw line and outrebounded the Blue Demons, 16-12, in the opening stanza. DePaul was limited to 42.3 percent efficiency from the floor in the first half.
The Blue Demons heated up to sink 65 percent of their shots from the floor, including a 6-of-9 clip from beyond the arc after the break. Xavier hit on 41.9 percent of its field goal tries in the second period. The contest was tied, 66-66, with 42 seconds remaining in regulation. DePaul scored five points at the free-throw line and limited Xavier to 1-of-6 shooting from the floor to keep the Musketeers at bay. Dee Davis had a chance to send the game into overtime, but his last second 3-point field goal try came up just short and rimmed out.
Despite the loss, Xavier enjoyed a 32-22 advantage in the rebounding battle. DePaul finished 10-of-20 from beyond the arc, compared to 8-of-23 efficiency from 3-point range by the visitors. The Blue Demons are now 2-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
