Recap: DePaul vs. St Johns
Rosemont, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Garrett was a perfect 13-of-13 at the free-throw line, finishing with a game-high 20 points, as the DePaul Blue Demons defeated the St. John's Red Storm in overtime, 71-67, in Big East Conference play at Allstate Arena.
Also having a strong game for the Blue Demons (10-9, 4-2 Big East) was Myke Henry who registered a double-double consisting of 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Aaron Simpson chipped in 13 points off the bench in order to snap a two-game slide.
Losers of four of the last five, the Red Storm (12-5, 1-4) were paced by Phil Greene IV and Rysheed Jordan with 17 points apiece, followed by D'Angelo Harrison who tallied 11 points and five rebounds, but shot only 2-of-10 from the floor before fouling out. Sir'Dominic Pointer tacked on 10 points before he too picked up his fifth personal.
Both teams struggled to find the basket in the first half as the Blue Demons converted only 6-of-27 from the floor and were 3-of-17 behind the 3-point line, efforts that allowed the visitors to take a 29-19 advantage at intermission. The Red Storm made good on 37.9 percent from the field through the first 20 minutes of action.
The lead reached 11 for St. John's early in the second, but for the most part the teams were only separated by a handful of points for the bulk of the period. With just under a minute remaining in regulation, DePaul led by three, 60-57, but with eight seconds on the clock a pair of free throws by Jordan knotted the score at 61-61 and sent the meeting to overtime.
The Red Storm had a chance to tie the score in the final seconds of the bonus session, but Chris Obekpa missed a short hook in the lane and a foul with one second remaining sent Durrell McDonald to the line where he converted both free throws to provide the hosts with a little breathing room.
In a game that featured 15 ties and nine lead changes, DePaul overcame 22 turnovers by hitting on all but four of 29 opportunities at the free-throw line and holding the Red Storm to 2-of-12 shooting on the perimeter.
