St. Bonaventure (7-3) at Delaware (0-10)
GAME NOTES: Still searching for their first win of the 2014-15 season, the Delaware Blue Hens try to put their best foot forward on Tuesday as they host the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens are dealing with what is tied for the fifth-longest slide in program history at 10 games right out of the gate. With Colonial Athletic Association action ready to tip off this weekend versus Northeastern, Delaware is hoping the time is now to finally get into the win column. The most recent setback for the group was an 84-81 loss at Robert Morris just over a week ago.
Meanwhile, the Bonnies have had considerable success thus far, winning seven of their first 10 outings. However, one of those defeats came the last time St. Bonaventure took the floor on Dec. 22 versus Maryland Eastern Shore, a meeting that resulted in an 82-80 loss. The setback was the second in the last three games for the club.
The all-time series between these two teams is tied at one game apiece, with the Bonnies claiming an 80-73 win at home at the Reilly Center exactly one year ago today.
In a game that featured four ties and six lead changes, the Bonnies led by no more than a single point and trailed by as many as 16 before closing the gap and suffering the two-point defeat in front of the hometown crowd. Four starters scored in double figures, beginning with Marcus Posley who tallied a game-high 26 points, followed by Youssou Ndoye with 18 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. Dion Wright and Jaylen Adams contributed 16 and 10 points, respectively, the latter adding seven of the unit's 16 assists.
Despite shooting a mediocre 40.6 percent from the field, Posley is leading the offensive attack for the Bonnies with 17.3 ppg, while Wright posts another 13.3 ppg to go along with 8.2 rpg. Adams (12.2 ppg), Ndoye (11.1 ppg) and Andell Cumberbatch (10.4 ppg) also have key roles at the offensive end of the floor as no one else on the roster averages even four points per game. Ndoye's 11.3 rpg and 27 blocked shots make him an imposing player on the interior.
The Blue Hens fell behind Robert Morris right out of the gate and never fully recovered, although they did whittle a 12-point deficit down to only three with just over a minute remaining in the second half before being tagged with yet another loss. Chivarsky Corbett came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points, followed by Kyle Anderson and Maurice Jeffers with 16 points apiece and a combined eight turnovers. Kory Holden returned to the court and contributed 13 points, a season-high seven assists and three steals.
Appearing in just three games, Anderson is listed as the top scoring threat for the Hens with his 17.7 ppg, while Cazmon Hayes, a starter in every outing, is responsible for 13.9 ppg but is shooting only 31.9 percent from the floor. Holden (10.8 ppg) and Corbett (10.0 ppg) also have a hand in producing 60.0 ppg for Delaware, but each is shooting in the neighborhood of only 36.5 percent from the floor, which has pushed the entire team down to a dismal 35.1 percent accuracy.
The Blue Hens are in complete disarray these days and don't appear to be getting any better, although they have lost the last two games by just a combined five points versus sub-standard competition. As long as the Bonnies don't make too many mistakes, they should be in store for the road win.
