St. Bonaventure (13-9) at Dayton (18-5)
GAME NOTES: With the Atlantic 10 Conference standings jumbled at the top, the Dayton Flyers are set to host St. Bonaventure in a key matchup Saturday afternoon at UD Arena.
Dayton entered the weekend in a four-way tie for first place in the A-10 along with VCU, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Flyers have split their last six games and are coming off Tuesday's 51-44 road win over Saint Louis. They will play their next two games at UD Arena, where the Flyers are unbeaten in 12 tries this season.
Meanwhile, St. Bonaventure is looking to get back into the win column after falling to UMass in the final seconds on Wednesday, 55-53. The Bonnies had won their previous two games -- both on buzzer-beaters by reigning National Player of the Week Marcus Posley -- including a 73-71 decision over No. 20 VCU last weekend.
Dayton notched a 78-61 win over the Bonnies last month in Olean, New York. UD has won 12 of the last 13 meetings and leads the all-time series, 18-9.
Posley is the A-10's third-leading scorer with 16.9 ppg. The junior guard began last week with a buzzer-beater at Davidson to snap the Wildcats' 15-game homecourt win streak, then pulled off a similar feat against nationally-ranked VCU three days later. But against UMass earlier this week, Posley shot just 4- of-16 from the floor to log his team-high 13 points. Andell Cumberbatch (9.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and Dion Wright (13.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg) joined him in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively, although the Bonnies shot only a collective 36.7 percent from the floor and 4-of-19 from the perimeter (.211) en route to the two-point loss.
St. Bonaventure got a taste of its own medicine, as the game was decided on Jabarie Hinds' 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining after the Bonnies committed a costly turnover. Center Youssou Ndoye committed five turnovers for the game and finished with only four points and seven rebounds, well off his season averages of 12.0 points and 10.5 rebounds.
Dayton has climbed the A-10 standings thanks to victories in 11 of its last 14 games. The Flyers are shooting 49 percent from the floor and a red-hot 40 percent from 3-point range in that span. Three players are averaging double figures on the season, led by Jordan Sibert with 16.1 ppg. Dyshawn Pierre (12.6 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and Kendall Pollard (12.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg) have made steady contributions in the paint.
In Tuesday's win at Saint Louis, the Flyers forced 19 turnovers and closed out the game on a 10-0 run over the final 3:40. Darrell Davis led the way with 12 points off the bench behind a 4-of-6 effort from the perimeter, while Pollard notched his first double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Both teams shot a mere 33 percent from the floor, but 3-point shooting was the difference as the Billikens converted only 1-of-11 attempts.
The Flyers are on a roll of late, but they can ill-afford to look past the Bonnies, who have proven over the last week to be a tougher out than their record would suggest. Still, UD has yet to lose on its home floor this season.
