Fordham (5-13) at Dayton (16-4)
GAME NOTES: Hoping to correct a seven-game losing streak, the Fordham Rams will hit the road to take on the Dayton Flyers Sunday in an Atlantic 10 Conference clash at UD Arena.
Fordham hasn't picked up a win since conference play began back on Jan. 4. The Rams were close to nabbing a win on Wednesday against Rhode Island, but the hosts fell just short in a 64-63 loss to the visiting Rams. This trip to Dayton breaks up a pair of two-game homestands for Fordham, which is 0-6 on the road this season.
Dayton had moved into the Top-25 just a few weeks ago, but the Flyers fell out after a tough loss to Davidson over a week ago. Dayton got back in the win column against Richmond last Saturday (63-60), but dropped a narrow contest to Massachusetts (66-64) on Thursday to slip to 6-2 in conference action. The Flyers are a perfect 11-0 at home this season.
The all-time series between Fordham and Dayton has been dominated by the Flyers. Dayton owns a 26-5 advantage in 31 games played, and has taken the last 10 meetings over the Rams. The sides have already met this season, with Dayton earning a 76-58 victory in the Bronx back on Jan. 10.
Fordham, having not won a conference matchup this season, nearly got the job done against Rhode Island. The host Rams held a 32-31 lead over Rhode Island at halftime, and hung tough with the visitors throughout the second half. But in the end, Rhode Island took its largest lead (three points) with just under two minutes to play, which was enough to hold on down the stretch. Eric Paschall led all Fordham scorers with 19 points in the loss, while Jon Severe came off the bench to tally 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Ryan Rhoomes notched a double-double for Fordham, chipping in 10 points with a team-best 16 rebounds against Rhode Island.
Paschall has been one of the more consistent players for Fordham this season, and certainly the go-to guy on the offensive end. He leads the team and ranks third in the Atlantic 10 in scoring with 17.0 ppg - just eight-tenths of a point behind St. Bonaventure's Marcus Posley, who leads the A-10. Mandell Thomas contributes 12.2 ppg for the Rams, and Chris Sengfelder comes in at 10.4 ppg to round out a trio of double-digit scorers this season. Fordham as a unit ranks third to last in the conference with a 62.4 ppg mark, and has been equally as bad on the defensive end of the floor, allowing opponents to net 67.9 ppg. Rhoomes is fourth in the A-10 and first on Fordham's roster in terms of rebounding, bringing down 9.0 rpg.
Massachusetts held a five-point advantage over Dayton in the waning seconds of Thursday night's conference battle, but a Dayton 3-pointer with three seconds to play cut the UMass lead back down to two. The advantage for the Minutemen was enough to hang onto the win in Amherst. Dayton connected on 43.9 percent of its shot attempts from the floor in the loss, and was led in scoring by Jordan Sibert's 19-point effort. Kendall Pollard chipped in with 12 points for the Flyers, and Dyshawn Pierre pulled down 13 rebounds and dished out seven assists, but shot just 3-of-10 from the field in the loss.
Dayton's 68.0 ppg mark as a team isn't anything special, but the team ranks second in the A-10 this season on the defensive end of the floor by holding opponents to just 59.5 ppg and 40.1 percent shooting. Sibert paces the Flyers in scoring, netting 15.9 ppg on 43.9 percent shooting. Pierre ranks second on the squad with 12.4 ppg (and is first on the team in rebounding at 7.4 boards per outing), and Pollard chips in with 11.4 ppg. Scoochie Smith leads Dayton in the assist column, having dished out 82 helpers so far. His 4.1 apg mark ranks fourth in the conference.
Dayton may be coming off a loss, but it's nothing compared to Fordham's free-fall. The Rams are winless on the road, and Dayton is unbeaten at home. Nothing should change on Sunday.
