Recap: Creighton vs. St Marys-CA
Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron Bright had a game-high 22 points and Kerry Carter scored 19, as the Saint Mary's Gaels upset Creighton in overtime, 71-67, in non-conference play at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
Bright and Carter combined for eight 3-pointers and six steals to help the Gaels (6-1) emerge victorious in their first road game of the season. Brad Waldow finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Dane Pineau also notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
Austin Chatman led the way with 19 points for the Bluejays (8-3), who saw their 24-game home winning streak come to a halt. Isaiah Zierden and Devin Brooks rounded out the double-figure scorers with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
Creighton led by as many as eight after Chatman knocked down a 3-pointer at the 11:07 mark of the opening frame. However, Saint Mary's would get 17 first- half points from Carter, including five threes, as the half ended in a 27-27 tie.
Bright had 19 of his 22 points after halftime, although Creighton shot 7-of-15 from the perimeter as a team during a second half that featured five ties and eight lead changes.
The Gaels maximized their overtime possessions by shooting 3-of-4 from the floor, while the Bluejays connected on only 2-of-7 attempts. SMC's largest lead came during the final minute of overtime, 70-64, following back-to-back buckets and then a pair of free throws by Waldow.
Waldow's 11 points were just under half his season's average of 22.8 ppg entering the contest. He shot just 2-of-10 from the floor in 40 minutes of action, but the Gaels got enough contributions from elsewhere to earn the rare road win in Omaha.
