St. John's (13-6) at Creighton (9-12)
GAME NOTES: Still waiting for their first Big East Conference win of the campaign, the disappointing Creighton Bluejays take the floor at CenturyLink Center Omaha on Wednesday night versus the St. John's Red Storm.
The Jays have yet to log a win in the month of January and have dropped nine straight outings dating back to a 62-58 loss to North Texas on Dec. 21. More recently the program was crushed by fourth-ranked Villanova over the weekend in a 71-50 final on the road. Needless to say, without a conference win, Creighton is bringing up the rear in the league standings.
On a more positive note, Creighton has won seven of 11 games played at home, which should be an encouraging thought heading into action versus St. John's.
As for the Red Storm, they too are near the bottom of the conference standings with only two wins in six chances. On Sunday afternoon, the squad hosted nationally-ranked Duke in a non-conference battle at Madison Square Garden and came up short in a 77-68 decision, marking the 1,000th win in the career of Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
In a series that dates back to 1961, the Red Storm have claimed victory in six of nine meetings with Creighton. However, with both teams being members of the Big East, they've split a pair of encounters.
The Red Storm appeared to be ready to delay the inevitable for coach Krzyzewski, leading by as many as 10 points with less than nine minutes remaining in New York, but the locals could not close the deal. Sir'Dominic Pointer registered a double-double for the hosts with 21 points and 10 rebounds, adding four assists, three blocked shots and three steals. Rysheed Jordan tacked on 18 points, Phil Greene IV 13 and D'Angelo Harrison 12 points before fouling out. St. John's failed to register a single point from the reserves.
Harrison, who has the top five scoring efforts of the season for the Red Storm, is averaging 19.1 ppg as he shoots 81.8 percent at the free-throw line. Jordan pitches in with another 13.9 ppg, Greene IV 12.5 ppg and Pointer 11.8 ppg, but beyond that there's a serious drop-off in production for the program. Nevertheless, the Storm is still outscoring foes by seven points per game by limiting those opponents to 39.0 percent shooting from the floor.
The Jays didn't stand much of a chance against Villanova over the weekend as they finished with just as many turnovers (19) as they did field goals. The visitors were only 37.3 percent accurate from the floor and 4-of-21 behind the 3-point line in the lackluster display. James Milliken was the only player to score in double figures for Creighton with 13 points, adding six rebounds, but missing all four of his tries out on the perimeter.
The Bluejays have been fighting an uphill battle in conference this season, shooting only 38.6 percent from the field, including a disappointing 29.5 percent beyond the arc, leading to only 58.6 ppg. Milliken is tops on the offense with 11.0 ppg, but his questionable shooting from the field overall (.384) and out on the perimeter (.286) is one of the reasons why the group is still seeking that first league triumph.
Considering the big one that got away on Sunday, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Red Storm suffer a let down on the road. However, with Creighton's offense being so limited it should not take much for St. John's to come out on top.
