DePaul (8-7) at Creighton (9-6)
GAME NOTES: The Creighton Bluejays will try to put a stop to a three-game losing streak as they host the DePaul Blue Demons in a Big East Conference battle at CenturyLink Center on Wednesday evening.
Thanks to three straight road losses for Creighton, the team has slipped back to 9-6 on the season. The Bluejays, who dropped Saturday's contest to Georgetown, 76-61, do own a 7-1 ledger at home, but are 0-2 in Big East play so far.
DePaul is on the upswing after winning each of the team's last two games. The Blue Demons took down Marquette (61-58) and Xavier (71-68) - both at home - to improve to 8-7 on the season with a 2-0 mark in-conference. DePaul is 1-2 on the season when playing in road games, though.
In a series that dates all the way back to the 1937-38 season, DePaul leads Creighton, 15-10. The two sides met three times last season, with all three decisions going to the Bluejays, including an 84-62 rout in the Big East Tournament.
DePaul took down Xavier on Saturday after the Blue Demons survived seven lead changes and 10 ties. But it was the home Blue Demons who showed up with the most offense, as they connected on 52.2 percent of their shots in the win, and went 10-of-20 from 3-point range. Billy Garrett tallied a double-double of 15 points and 10 assists to lead his team, although the distinction of high scorer on DePaul went to Forrest Robinson, who netted 17 points in the win. Jamee Crockett chipped in with 10 points for DePaul.
The Blue Demons are used to scoring in bunches, as the team heads into Wednesday's matchup averaging 73.6 ppg on 45.3 percent shooting. But the downside for DePaul has been on the other end of the floor, where the Demons allow 73.8 ppg to opponents - the most per game surrendered in the Big East. Four players for DePaul are scoring in double figures, led by Myke Henry's 13.5 ppg mark. He's trailed closely by Garrett's 13.4 ppg and Tommy Hamilton's 12.8 ppg. Hamilton is grabbing 7.1 rpg to lead the team, and has blocked 19 shots for the Blue Demons as well. Crockett rounds out the group of double- digit scorers with 12.1 ppg.
After a 15-point besting by Georgetown, in which the Hoyas shot 58.7 percent from the floor, Creighton is thanking its lucky stars that the team's three- game road trip is over. The Bluejays connected on just 30.8 percent of their shots in the contest, which included a 5-of-25 mark from 3-point distance. Isaiah Zierden and Zach Hanson each tallied 11 points to lead Creighton in scoring, while Zierden added in a team high with seven rebounds. The Bluejays did connect on 24-of-29 from the free-throw line, about the only bright spot in the loss.
Even without the biggest name in college basketball from a season ago (Doug McDermott), the Bluejays have still been able to rattle off an average of 70.1 ppg on 42 percent shooting from the floor. But defensively, Creighton has allowed 65.3 ppg to opponents - ranked seventh in the Big East. The team is also surrendering 37-percent from 3-point range to those opponents. Austin Chatman enters Wednesday's match scoring a team-best 13.3 ppg, adding in 68 assists to lead the team in the category. Zierden is the only other player for Creighton to own a double-digit scoring average at 11.3 ppg. Devin Brooks tops the team with a 5.3 rpg mark.
Creighton has been a strong team at home this season, but the Bluejays need to step it up offensively if they want to start competing in a contentious Big East. DePaul seems to falter the second it steps off campus, but with two straight wins the team could be riding a momentum shift. Needing a conference win badly, look for the Bluejays to bounce back in Omaha.
