CORNELL BIG RED

Cornell Big Red

Cornell Big Red VS. Dartmouth Big Green

Dartmouth (9-11) at Cornell (1-19)

GAME NOTES: The one team in the Ivy League still without a conference win takes the floor this evening, as the Cornell Big Red host the Dartmouth Big Green at Newman Arena.

Not only has Cornell came up empty in six league bouts, the team has won just a single game in 20 attempts this season and that was a 77-55 blowout of Oberlin back on Jan. 11. More recently, the Big Red went up against Princeton last weekend and were handed a 69-48 setback by the Tigers in New Jersey.

Over on the other side, Dartmouth is coming off consecutive defeats last week while hosting Yale (67-54) and Brown (75-62), pushing the program to 2-4 in league play as a result.

This long-running relationship is currently knotted at 103-103, although at home Cornell has won 10 straight over the Big Green. However, the most recent meeting last March went to Dartmouth on its home floor in Hanover by a score of 76-62.

The Dartmouth offense was nowhere to be found in the first three minutes of the game against Brown on Saturday, as the Bears jumped out to a 7-0 advantage and then a 17-3 edge, en route to the double-digit win. John Golden tried to keep the Big Green in the mix with his 17 points and six rebounds, followed by Alex Mitola and Tyler Melville with 13 and 12 points, respectively, for a squad that shot only 33.9 percent from the floor on the night.

The Big Green have had a different leading scorer each of the last five outings and part of that is due to a juggling of the lineup because of injuries. Gabas Maldunas still sits atop the scoring list for the program with 11.2 ppg, but he is out of action following knee surgery, which means only Mitola (10.4 ppg) and Connor Boehm (10.3 ppg) are the only active double-digit performers currently.

After converting only eight field goals in the first half against Princeton last weekend, the Big Red made it even harder on themselves with just seven baskets over the final 20 minutes of action. The team finished the meeting with only 34.1 percent accuracy from the floor and had more turnovers (16) than field goals. Nolan Cressler was the only double-digit scorer for the visitors with 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the floor.

One of three players to have started every game for the slumping Big Red, Cressler is responsible for a team-best 16.5 ppg, having made good on 42 of his 3-point tries. Devin Cherry checks in with another 11.4 ppg, but in his case his efforts from beyond the arc have been lackluster to say the least, hitting attempts at a mere 24.5 percent.

With so many missing pieces to their player puzzle, the Big Green might be leaving the door open tonight to a possible win for the hosts, but a lot has to go right for Cornell to finally break through against another Division I opponent.
