Boulder, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Scott scored 23 points as the Colorado Buffaloes grabbed an 87-78 win over the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational at Coors Events Center.

Also scoring in double figures for Colorado (16-17), which was playing without leading scorer Askia Booker who opted not to take part in the outing, were Tory Miller with 12 points, Eli Stalzer 11 and both Tre-Shaun Fletcher and Xavier Johnson with 10 apiece.

With the victory, Colorado will now face off against Seattle in the next round.

The Bulldogs (20-15) were paced by Tyrell Nelson with a game-high 27 points in a perfect 10-of-10 shooting from the floor and 7-of-9 at the free-throw line. Adonis Burbage and Harold McBride pitched in with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Both teams shot quite well from the floor in the first half, Colorado knocking down 58.8 percent and the Bulldogs 56.5 percent, allowing the Buffs to claim 44-36 edge at the break.

In the second half both teams dropped to about 47 percent accuracy from the field, and even though the hosts made good on only 1-of-9 behind the 3-point line in the frame they were able to hold on for the victory.
