ULM (2-1) vs. Coastal Carolina (3-1)
GAME NOTES: The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers try to run their win streak to three in a row as they challenge the ULM Warhawks as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament on the mainland.
The Chanticleers, members of the Big South Conference, lost to UCLA 10 days ago by a score of 84-71, but have since responded with consecutive victories over the likes of Columbia International (82-51) and Piedmont International (76-33), boosting their stats along the way.
As for the Warhawks, their most recent opponent overshadowed those of Coastal Carolina rather easily, as the team took eighth-ranked Florida to overtime on Friday before losing by a mere five points, 61-56, on the road. The team does have a couple of wins already though, taking out UAB and Champion Baptist leading up to the game with the Gators.
Coastal Carolina won the first and only meeting between these two programs, according to ULM sources.
Both teams will be back in action on Thanksgiving against either Robert Morris or host Chattanooga, depending on the outcomes of Wednesday's contests.
Despite shooting only 26.7 percent from the field in the second half against nationally-ranked Florida, the Warhawks still got the game into overtime. However, in the extra session ULM made just two field goals, letting the Gators off the hook in their own house. Tylor Ongwae was credited with 19 points and eight rebounds for the visitors, followed by Nick Coppola with 11 points, although the latter shot only 3-of-10 from the floor as the team converted a mere 32.8 percent overall.
Ongwae, who led the team in scoring last season with 16.2 ppg, is at it again in 2014-15 with his 17.7 ppg in the early going. He has knocked down 58.5 percent of his field goal chances and because he remains close to the rim, is coming up with 7.3 rpg to pace the program in that department as well. Coppola (10.7 ppg) and reserve Jamaal Samuel (10.0 ppg) also have contributed significantly to the ULM offense to this point.
Coastal Carolina's defense went to work right away against Piedmont, limiting the visitors to just six field goals in the first half and an identical number after the break, cruising to the easy victory by forcing 18 turnovers. Warren Gillis and Elijah Wilson represented the starting five with 12 points apiece, while Josh Cameron pitched in with 11 points in only 14 minutes off the bench for a squad that converted 42.3 percent from the field and 8-of-16 behind the 3-point line.
With the last two wins, the Chanticleers have been able to stuff their stat line to a degree and are now averaging 77.0 ppg, while permitting a mere 51.0 ppg. That margin won't stand up for too long given the better competition on the future schedule, but at least Coastal can be confident in knowing some of the reserves can contribute when called upon.
Cameron (14.5 ppg) and Gillis (13.3 ppg) tend to be the go-to guys for the Chanticleers, a team which is beating opponents on the glass by a whopping 19.0 rpg and have held foes to just 32.7 percent shooting from the floor and 25.8 percent on the perimeter.
If the Chanticleers think they are going to carry over some of the effort that they displayed in the last two games versus ULM, they have another thing coming. Sure, the Warhawks might have a let-down following the loss to Florida, but still the team will come out on top.
