Recap: Clemson vs. Wake Forest
Clemson, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Smith's putback as time expired lifted Clemson to an improbable 59-57 win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Atlantic Coast Conference play at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Donte Grantham led the Tigers (11-8, 3-4 ACC) with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jordan Roper added 12 points in the victory. Smith provided a spark off the bench, scoring six points and grabbing eight rebounds in only 17 minutes.
Devin Thomas recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards for the Demon Deacons (9-11, 1-6), who suffered their third straight loss. Codi Miller-McIntyre added 14 points and six boards.
Wake Forest took the first lead of the game and never relinquished it until the final minute of regulation. The Demon Deacons enjoyed a 33-27 cushion at the break despite shooting just 32.4 percent from the field in the first half.
That lead swelled to as many as 12 points at the 16:35 mark of the second stanza, although Clemson answered with a 19-8 run to make it a one-point game with just under eight minutes to play.
The Demon Deacons would score just one point in the final four minutes. With the score tied 57-57, they turned the ball over with 23 seconds remaining and Clemson held for the final possession. Smith pulled down a missed layup by teammate Rod Hall in the final second and put it back for the game-winner.
While the Tigers certainly had their struggles offensively (.351), they committed only seven turnovers and held Wake Forest to 31-percent shooting for the game.
