Cincinnati Bearcats VS. Va. Commonwealth Rams

Recap: Cincinnati vs. VA Commonwealth

Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Melvin Johnson led all scorers with 18 points, and the VCU Rams cruised to a 68-47 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats in non-conference play at Fifth Third Arena.

Treveon Graham added 12 points and Jordan Burgess scored 11 for the Rams (8-3), who have won four of five games during the month of December. That trio combined to shoot 11-of-20 (.550) from 3-point range.

Bearcats associate head coach Larry Davis took over head coaching duties for Mick Cronin, who is sidelined indefinitely with an unruptured aneurysm.

Octavius Ellis led the way with 12 points to go along with seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals for the Bearcats (7-3), who fell flat three days after beating nationally-ranked San Diego State earlier this week. Ellis was the team's only player in double figures.

VCU claimed a 34-21 halftime lead after knocking down 8-of-18 threes (.444) in the opening frame.

It was more of the same in the second stanza, as the Rams shot 7-of-13 (.538) from the perimeter to keep UC at bay. Johnson scored all 18 of his points after halftime.

The Bearcats' 47 points are the fewest VCU has allowed in a game this season. This was the first meeting between these two teams since the 1980-81 season.
