Georgia (3-3) at Chattanooga (3-4)
GAME NOTES: The Georgia Bulldogs will try to halt a two-game losing streak on Tuesday night, as they visit McKenzie Arena to play the Chattanooga Mocs in a non-conference clash.
Georgia had won three straight prior to its participation in the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden last week, when it suffered back-to-back losses to Gonzaga (88-76) and Minnesota (66-62). All three of the Bulldogs' wins this season have come at home while all three losses have been on road or neutral courts.
Chattanooga has had a similar track record as Georgia this season, going perfect at home (3-0) but losing all four of its road games. After winning a pair of home satellite games as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis over Robert Morris (61-46) and Coastal Carolina (76-67), the Mocs dropped a 77-69 road decision at Kennesaw State on Saturday.
The Bulldogs have a comfortable 27-5 advantage over the Mocs in the all-time series, including a 9-1 mark in Chattanooga.
The Bulldogs led for a total of less than two minutes in the third-place game of the NIT Season Tip-Off, and while they were able to cut their 14-point second-half deficit to just three in the final minute, they could not complete the comeback. Although they outshot Minnesota from the field, 45.8 percent to 42.3 percent, they were plagued by a game-high 18 turnovers and were outscored from 3-point range, 30-9. Marcus Thornton tallied a double-double in the loss with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while J.J. Frazier and Yante Maten netted 12 points apiece.
On the season, Georgia shoots an impressive 46 percent from the field (but just 25.8 percent from 3-point range) for 74.5 ppg while allowing 70.8 ppg on the other end of the court. Thornton anchors the frontcourt with 13.2 ppg and 7.5 rpg. Nemanja Djurisic (12.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg) and Charles Mann (11.7 ppg, 5.2 rpg) are also strong rebounders, and Kenny Gaines (10.2 ppg) rounds out the double-digit scorers.
After taking a brief lead early in the second half, the Mocs fell victim to a 9-0 Kennesaw State run and could never recover en route to an eight-point loss. They shot only 36.4 percent from the field in the second half as their game average slipped to less than 40 percent, while they were also plagued by a game-high 15 turnovers. Casey Jones tried his best to transcend the struggles of his teammates with 22 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Ronrico White was the only other player in double figures with 15 points.
Chattanooga's production this season has been nearly the same as its opponents, as it shoots 42.4 percent from the floor for 68.3 ppg while allowing 67.3 ppg on 41 percent shooting. Jones leads the way with 14.4 ppg and 6.6 rpg while making 50 percent of his field goal attempts. Justin Tuoyo (9.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg), White (9.6 ppg) and Greg Pryor (9.4 ppg) are all on the doorstep of double figures.
Despite Chattanooga's home success and Georgia's struggles away from Athens, the Bulldogs are simply the more talented team and should find a way to pull this one out.
