Coastal Carolina (4-1) at Chattanooga (2-3)
GAME NOTES: The Chattanooga Mocs try to remain perfect at home as they host the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis on the Mainland Thursday afternoon.
Losers of all three games on the road thus far, the Mocs moved to 2-0 in their own building on Wednesday by taking down Robert Morris, 61-46, as part of this event.
The Chanticleers, off to a 4-1 start to the 2014-15 campaign, they logged their third win in a row yesterday with a 61-48 triumph over ULM at McKenzie Arena.
Chattanooga won the only previous meeting between the programs, a 75-69 final back on Dec. 28, 1996.
Coastal shot only 39.3 percent from the field on Wednesday, including 6-of-21 behind the 3-point line, but thanks to great ball control (five turnovers), the team played well enough to come away with the double-digit victory against ULM. Josh Cameron came off the bench to tally a game-high 17 points, followed by Shivaughn Wiggins and Warren Gillis with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for a squad that held the opposition to just 5-of-25 beyond the arc.
Through the first four games of the campaign the Chanticleers were scoring an impressive 77.0 ppg, but obviously the competition took a step up yesterday. However, the defense was still right on point considering Coastal was allowing only 51.0 ppg before heading into action against ULM. Cameron and Gillis stand as the players to watch as they are both scoring in double figures through five games.
Like the Chanticleers in their outing, Chattanooga also had a tough time finding the basket as they clashed with Robert Morris, but still the Mocs shot better than the visitors, hitting on 39.0 percent from the floor compared to a meager 27.8 percent for the Colonials. Additionally, the Mocs made just 5- of-16 beyond the arc and turned the ball over 18 times, but thanks to a 24-13 scoring edge at the free-throw line, all of that could be overlooked. Greg Pryor, Justin Tuoyo and Casey Jones all accounted for 13 points, the latter adding 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.
On a team that is scoring only 66.2 ppg currently, Jones is the lone double- digit scorer on the Mocs roster with his 11.8 ppg. Along with Tuoyo (9.6 ppg), Jones has been a physical player on the inside, grabbing 5.0 rpg and getting to the free-throw line 40 times, accounting for one-third of his team's trips to the stripe. Tuoyo is responsible for a team-best 6.2 rpg and is the only other player with more than nine attempts at the free-throw line.
As long as the Chanticleers can dictate the tempo of this meeting and force Chattanooga to get up and down the floor more than the hosts might like, this is certainly a game that could be claimed by Coastal Carolina.
