Recap: Charlotte vs. Penn State

Charleston, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Braxton Ogbueze netted 26 points to lead the Charlotte 49ers to a 105-97 double-overtime triumph over the Penn State Nittany Lions at TD Arena in the first round of the Charleston Classic.

Mike Thorne, Jr. recorded a double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds in 43 minutes of action for Charlotte (2-0), while Terrence Williams scored 13 points. Torin Dorn and Keyshawn Woods chipped in 12 and 11 points off the bench, respectively.

For Penn State (2-1), D.J. Newbill tallied 35 points and eight rebounds during his 50 minutes. Brandon Taylor contributed 19 points and nine rebounds, while Shep Garner and Geno Thorpe registered 14 points apiece. Ross Travis also pulled down nine boards for the Nittany Lions in the loss.

The 49ers knocked down 57.7 percent of their field goal tries, including a 6- of-8 clip from 3-point range, in the opening 20 minutes of the contest en route to a 40-34 lead at the intermission. PSU was limited to 39.4 percent efficiency from the floor in the first half.

The Nittany Lions managed to rally back after the break as they hit on 41.2 percent of their field goal tries and sank 15-of-18 shots at the charity stripe in the second period. Charlotte led by as many as 17 in the second half. PSU trailed, 83-80, with just seconds remaining in regulation before John Johnson drained a shot from beyond the arc off of a Newbill assist to force an extra session.

Thorne, Jr. made a free-throw attempt with 38 seconds left to play in the first overtime period to even the score at 90. Newbill had a layup blocked by Charlotte's Cameron Blakley on the ensuing possession, and Dorn missed a potential game-winning attempt from 3-point range just before the buzzer.

Ogbueze made a jumper 12 seconds into the second extra session to give the 49ers a lasting lead. PSU went 3-for-7 from the floor and missed both its free-throw tries in the second overtime.

Despite the loss, the Nittany Lions enjoyed a commanding, 46-24 edge in the rebounding battle.

Charlotte will face South Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m., and Penn State will play Cornell at 9 p.m. in the continuation of the tournament.
