Appalachian State (3-4) at Charlotte (5-4)
GAME NOTES: Coming off a thrilling overtime victory, the Charlotte 49ers will look to string a pair of wins together as they play host to the Appalachian State Mountaineers n a non-conference affair at Halton Arena on Thursday.
Appalachian State needs to find some consistency, as the Mountaineers bring a 3-4 record into this clash after losing two consecutive games. Appalachian State dropped its most recent contest to Georgia Tech, 70-57, in the first of a four-game road trip.
Charlotte knows what a two-game skid feels like. The 49ers were in the midst of one and were close to making it three in a row until they took down the College of Charleston in overtime, 90-85, on Tuesday.
Appalachian State and Charlotte are certainly no strangers. These two programs have met a total of 33 times on the floor, with the 49ers owning a 20-13 all- time series lead. The sides have split the last six decisions in the series.
Georgia Tech shot just 2-of-15 from 3-point range in the clash with Appalachian State, but that hardly affected the Yellow Jackets as they made 44.6 percent of their tries from the floor in the 13-point victory over the Mountaineers. ASU was led by Chris Burgess, who scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting in the loss. Dustin Clarke contributed 13 points with nine rebounds, and Frank Eaves added nine points for the Mountaineers, who shot 46.9 percent from the field.
Eaves saw his team-leading scoring average drop after the nine-point outing against Georgia Tech. He enters the contest with Charlotte netting 15.9 ppg, but on just 34.6 percent shooting. Burgess is the only other player to have a double-digit scoring total entering this Thursday matchup, making 51.1 percent of his tries from the floor for 10.6 ppg. Tommy Spagnolo (9.7 ppg) tops the squad in rebounding, bringing down 6.9 boards per outing. As a unit, Appalachian State could use a bit more scoring, netting just 62.0 ppg.
It's a good thing Charlotte netted 52.5 percent of its field goal attempts from the field in the overtime win over College of Charleston, because the Cougars connected on a very healthy 51.6 percent of their tries from the floor. Pierria Henry led the way for the 49ers with 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, also tallying three steals. Torin Dorn chipped in with 19 points, Willie Clayton notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Keyshawn Woods added another 13 points to the winning effort. Charlotte shot an impressive 10-of-17 from 3-point range in the victory.
Braxton Ogbueze had just six points in the win over College of Charleston, but he still enters netting a team-best 13.2 ppg for a 49ers squad managing 76.4 ppg on 45 percent shooting as a group. Mike Thorne Jr. checks in at second in scoring, netting 12.0 ppg with a team-best 8.3 rpg mark, and Henry comes in at third with 11.2 ppg, 6.6 rpg and 50 total assists on the season. Dorn, who hasn't started one game this season, rounds out the double-digit scorers with 11.1 ppg. Charlotte's defense could use work, as the team allows 76.9 ppg to opponents.
As was the case for Appalachian State against Georgia Tech, going up against Charlotte simply presents too much of an offensive hill for the Mountaineers to climb. The 49ers are netting 76.4 ppg to ASU's 62.0, and at Halton Arena, Charlotte will have an even greater advantage.
