The Citadel (3-3) at College of Charleston (2-4)
GAME NOTES: In a battle of former Southern Conference, foes The Citadel Bulldogs clash with the College of Charleston Cougars at TD Arena on Tuesday evening.
Through six games, The Citadel has exactly as many wins as losses, with three of each. They pulled even on the season with an 84-45 demolition job of Warren Wilson last time out. All three of the Bulldogs' victories have come against non-Division I programs. They will host Navy when they next hit the floor.
Charleston is returning home after a lengthy time away. The Cougars took part in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, with three games in as many days, before traveling to take on West Virginia this past Saturday. They were routed by the Mountaineers (86-57) after going just 1-2 during the Tip-Off. This contest begins a three-game homestand for the Cougars, which continues against South Carolina State a week from Thursday.
These teams used to compete against one another in the SoCon before the Cougars took off for the Colonial Athletic Association last season. Charleston leads the series, 59-32.
The Citadel ran out to a 43-10 halftime lead against Warren Wilson and never looked back. The Bulldogs nailed nearly 60 percent of their field goal tries in the contest, including a 9-of-15 effort from beyond the arc. At the other end, they limited the visiting Owls to only 17 field goals on 26.6 percent accuracy. Ashton Moore netted 15 points and dished out six assists, leading five players in double figures.
Although their schedule has not been the most challenging, the Bulldogs have put forth a solid shooting effort this season, connecting on 48.5 percent of their shots from the field. They are only netting 68.5 points per game, but that is been plenty considering they only allow 58.8 points per game on 43 percent accuracy from the floor. Moore (17 ppg, 3.2 apg) is the leading offensive threat, while P.J. Horgan (14 ppg, 6.2 rpg) is the only other double-digit scorer and the top rebounder on the roster. Marshall Harris III (7.2 ppg, 4.2 apg) doesn't score that much, but he is the team's best distributor.
Charleston turned the ball over too frequently and allowed the Mountaineers to get to the free-throw line too often to have a chance. The Cougars gave up the ball 18 times, while forcing only seven miscues by the Mountaineers, who knocked down 20-of-26 attempts from the charity stripe. Evan Bailey and Donovan Gilmore each had 13 points in the losing effort.
The Cougars don't move at the quickest pace on offense. They are only producing 61.2 points per game, while connecting on 43.8 percent of their attempts from the field. Adjehi Baru (10.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg) and Anthony Stitt (10.5 ppg, 3.2 apg) are the only players averaging in double figures, although Canyon Barry (9.7 ppg) and Joe Chealey (9.7 ppg) have shown the ability to do so.
Even though the Cougars may not be an offensive juggernaut, they are still more talented than most of the teams The Citadel has beaten this season. Add in the homecourt advantage and all signs points to a win for Charleston.
