Chaminade Silverswords VS. Missouri Tigers

Missouri (2-3) vs. Chaminade (2-2)

GAME NOTES: The Missouri Tigers and the Chaminade Silverswords will attempt to salvage their stays in the Maui Invitational on Wednesday afternoon in the seventh-place game at the Lahaina Civic Center.

After falling to the consolation side of the bracket with a 72-53 first-round loss to Arizona on Monday, Missouri continued to struggle on Tuesday, suffering an 82-61 setback against Purdue. The Tigers are now just 2-3 on the season.

Chaminade, a yearly participant in this event as a Division II team, was clearly outmatched in both of its contests, losing to Pittsburgh (81-68) and BYU (121-85). The two straight losses spoiled a solid start to the season for the Silverswords and dropped them to 2-2.

This marks the first-ever meeting between the Tigers and the Silverswords.

The Tigers were outmatched from the opening tip on Tuesday, falling behind to Purdue by 25 at the half and never sniffing the lead in the second stanza. They shot a lowly 34.5 percent from the field on the afternoon, including 7- of-20 from 3-point range, lost the rebounding battle (41-28) and were outscored at the free-throw line (33-16). Johnathan Williams III was one of the few bright spots in the setback with 14 points. Keith Shamburger added 11 points.

Missouri has struggled to put points on the board all season long, as it nets a mere 61.8 ppg on less than 40 percent shooting. Even with a disappointing effort against Purdue, its defense is typically stellar, allowing 65.6 ppg on 40.6 percent shooting. Montaque Gill-Caeser is the team's leading scorer with 12.8 ppg, but he does so on just 35 percent from the floor. Wes Clark (10.6 ppg) and Williams (10.2 ppg) are the only other double-digit scorers.

Although the Silverswords put together an impressive point total in their latest game and made 10-of-25 from 3-point range, they only shot 37.5 percent overall. Even worse, they had no answer for BYU in the 36-point setback, as they allowed the Cougars to make a school-record 17 3-pointers. Kiran Shastri paced four teammates in double figures with 16 points. David Ware came off the bench to scored 15, while Kuany Kuany and Lee Bailey netted 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Chaminade's offensive success this season has been well established, as it scores 80.0 ppg on nearly 44 percent field goal shooting while knocking down 9.5 3-pointers per contest, but it has had difficulty on the other end of the floor in yielding 80.8 ppg. Shastri puts up 14.3 ppg with impressive percentage from the field (.500), 3-point range (.433) and the foul line (.889). Kuany (13.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg) is the only other player who averages in double figures, but in total nine players score at least 4.3 ppg.

The leaky Chaminade defense is just the medicine the Tigers need to get back on track offensively. Expect Missouri to salvage their trip with a convincing victory.
