Chaminade Silverswords VS. BYU Cougars

BYU (3-1) vs. Chaminade (2-1)

GAME NOTES: The Chaminade Silverswords and the BYU Cougars will face off at the Lahaina Civic Center on Tuesday night in the consolation round of the Maui Invitational.

The winner will play either Missouri or Purdue in the fifth-place game on Wednesday, while the two losers square off for seventh place.

BYU nearly pulled off an upset in the first round over nationally-ranked San Diego State, but after battling through two overtime periods it eventually fell on the wrong end of a 92-87 decision. It was the Cougars' first loss of the season in four tries.

Chaminade, a member of Division II's Pacific West Conference and a yearly participant in this event, suffered an 81-68 loss at the hands of Pittsburgh in the first round. The setback spoiled a 2-0 start to the season for the Silverswords.

BYU won the only previous meeting between the squads back in the 2004 version of this event, 77-56.

The Cougars trailed for most of regulation in the first round but a Tyler Haws' 3-pointer with 1:38 left tied the score and forced overtime. The Cougars had control late in the first overtime with a five-point lead inside of two minutes remaining only to cough up that advantage, and they were outscored in the second extra session, 16-11. They shot only 38.5 percent from the field but stayed alive thanks to a 13-of-30 showing from 3-point range. Haws was especially deadly from beyond the arc (5-of-9) on his way to a game-high 26 points. Kyle Collinsworth stuffed the stat sheet with 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Anson Winder (14 points), Isaac Neilson (12) and Chase Fischer (11) rounded out the double-digit scorers.

BYU puts up a lofty 93.5 ppg on the season (scoring at least 87 points in each game) while yielding 73.0 ppg on the other end of the floor. Haws is an elite scorer with 19.8 ppg. Fischer (14.5 ppg) is a stellar second option, and Winder (11.8 ppg) is off to a solid start as well.

The Silverswords hung tough with Pitt in the first half and even held a lead midway through the frame, but they quickly lost control following a 17-6 run by Pitt, and they were unable to get within nine points of the lead in the second stanza. Their shooting performance was outstanding, as they made good on 51 percent from the field (including 11-of-27 from 3-point range), but they limited their shot opportunities by getting dominated in the rebounding battle, 51-17. Pacing five teammates in double figures with 12 points apiece were Kuany Kuany and Kevin Hu. Lee Bailey tallied 11 points and nine assists, Frankie Eteuati also scored 11 and Michael Louder netted 10 off the bench.

Chaminade shoots 46.3 percent from the field this season for 78.3 ppg, and it showed against Pitt that its offensive success is not just a product of its lesser competition. Kiran Shastri leads the team in scoring with 13.7 ppg and has knocked down 10-of-20 from 3-point range. Kuany brings 13.0 ppg and 7.7 rpg to the table, and Bailey (9.3 ppg) dishes out 5.3 assists per contest.

Chaminade always brings its best during this event, and it should be able to give BYU a run for its money in what is expected to be a high-scoring game, but talent will win out in the end for the Cougars.
