CENTRAL FLORIDA KNIGHTS

Central Florida Knights

Central Florida Knights VS. Georgia Southern Eagles

Georgia Southern (4-1) at UCF (4-1)

GAME NOTES: The Georgia Southern Eagles seek their first road win of the season on Tuesday night when they clash with the UCF Knights at CFE Arena.

Since losing their season opener on the road at Illinois (80-71), the Eagles have settled in at home and won four straight in Hanner Fieldhouse. The most recent of those victories took place on Saturday as the team topped South Carolina State, 71-58.

While the Eagles have spend the bulk of the early season at home, UCF has yet to leave the friendly confines of CFE Arena. The Knights, who are also 4-1 through the first five games, are not slated to hit the road until later this week at Florida State. The squad doesn't leave the Sunshine State until a Dec. 11 date at Illinois-Chicago.

After losing to Davidson a little less than a week ago, the Knights responded with a 75-67 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Sunday.

The Knights lead the all-time series by a count of 2-1, with each of those contests being decided by three points or less. The most recent contest took place in 1987, with UCF putting up a 61-59 victory.

Against SC State, the Eagles held the visitors to a mere 37.5 percent shooting from the floor and forced the squad into 18 turnovers, just enough of a disruption to get GSU over the top and into the win column yet again. Jelani Hewitt led the offense with a game-high 23 points, one of four starters in double figures, followed by Trent Wiedeman with 18 points and eight rebounds. Also getting in on the act were Mike Hughes and Angel Matias with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Hewitt, who had one of the highest-scoring seasons in team history in 2013-14, is back to his old tricks with an impressive 22.4 ppg based on not only 41.9 percent accuracy behind the 3-point line, but also 94.1 percent at the free- throw line where he has missed just two of his 34 chances. Wiedeman, who has knocked down 94.7 percent at the stripe, checks in with 14.2 ppg and 7.8 rpg, his efforts on the glass second only to Matias (8.2 rpg) currently as the team comes up with a whopping 46.6 rpg, compared to just 33.8 rpg for the opposition.

Aside from a couple of ties early on in the first half, the Knights controlled the action against Bethune-Cookman the last time out as they shot 52.2 percent from the field while hitting on 8-of-14 (.571) behind the 3-point line. The visitors didn't just go away however, as they made good on 51.9 percent from the floor, but they were outscored 19-8 at the free-throw line. Justin McBride erupted for 31 points and eight rebounds in just 22 minutes off the bench, followed by Kasey Wilson with 12 points and six boards to lead the starters.

McBride, who had a previous career high of just 13 points, is now scoring 7.8 ppg on the season, but his performance the last time out might just earn him some additional playing time. Ahead of him on the scoring list at the moment are B.J. Taylor (12.8 ppg), Adonys Henriquez (11.8 ppg) and Wilson (10.2 ppg), although Taylor has missed one game and is currently listed as being questionable due to a sprained ankle.

If McBride can put together an effort that is even half as strong as the one he did against Bethune-Cookman, even if Taylor is still out of the lineup, UCF should be bringing home another win this week.
