Detroit (6-4) at UCF (5-4)
GAME NOTES: The UCF Knights will try to snap a three-game losing streak on Wednesday when they play host to the Detroit Titans at CFE Arena.
These non-conference foes have never met on the hardwood previously.
A promising 5-1 start to the season has given way to an unpredictable future for the Knights, who hope to bounce back after a forgettable second half against Florida Atlantic last Saturday.
UCF led by one, 26-25, at halftime, then went out and shot a horrid 16.1 percent from the field after the break. FAU began the second half with a 21-2 run and pulled away for a 54-41 road win.
B.J. Taylor was the only Knight who found any success offensively, as he scored 17 points on 4-of-8 shooting. He has led the team in scoring four times in the seven games he has played and is averaging 13.6 ppg. Adonys Henriquez is the only other double-digit scorer at an even 10 points per game.
The Knights have averaged just 58 ppg during their skid after putting up 70.2 over their first six contests. Opponents are scoring 71.4 ppg and have forced nearly four more turnovers per game.
Detroit hung tough with No. 11 Wichita State last Saturday before ultimately falling, 77-68, to snap a two-game winning streak.
The Titans were actually in front by 10 points early in the second half, but the Shockers ended the game on a 33-14 run. They made seven free throws in the final minute to secure the win.
Juwan Howard Jr. scored a game-high 27 points while Matthew Grant and Paris Bass each netted 12 for the Titans, who uncharacteristically committed more turnovers than their opponent.
Turnover margin had been something Detroit hung its hat on, as it has forced 16.5 giveaways and only coughed it up 11.9 times per game. The Titans also shoot an efficient 74.6 percent from the foul line.
Howard, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in his career against Wichita State, is pouring in 19.5 ppg, while Bass chips in 12.3 ppg and a team-best 6.1 rpg off the bench.
Three of the Titans' four losses have come against power conference programs, and they put up a good fight against one of the better teams in the nation the last time out. UCF has regressed over the past two weeks, and unless the Knights can find someone who can counter Howard's production, a fourth straight loss seems imminent.
