California Golden Bears VS. Montana Grizzlies

Montana (2-3) at California (5-1)

GAME NOTES: The California Golden Bears will try for their third straight win when they return home on Wednesday night to take on the Montana Grizzlies in a non-conference clash at Haas Pavilion.

Montana had won back-to-back games prior to its most recent contest when it fell at San Francisco, 76-57, to drop to 2-3. The Grizzlies have lost three of four on the road.

Cal has gotten off to an impressive 5-1 start this season, with its most notable win coming over then-nationally-ranked Syracuse in the 2K Sports Classic on Nov. 20, 73-59. The Bears ventured to Fresno State on Sunday and captured a solid road victory, 64-57.

The teams met just once before way back in the 1930-31 season, with Cal claiming a 37-23 win.

The Grizzlies had a difficult time with San Fran earlier in the week, as they never led and trailed by as many as 25 late in the game. They shot only 33.3 percent from the field, but their field goal percentage wouldn't have mattered much regardless since USF shot a sizzling 64.9 percent. Martin Breunig was solid in the setback, registering 14 points and eight rebounds, while Jermaine Edmonds came off the bench to score 13.

On the season, Montana has not performed particularly well on either end of the court. It shoots less than 42 percent from the field for 66.2 ppg while allowing 69.0 ppg on 45.2 percent shooting, and it also sits with a -2.0 rebounding margin. Breunig has been the catalyst, as he not only scores 13.8 ppg on 66.7 percent field goal shooting but he rips down a team-best 7.2 ppg. Jordan Gregory (10.6 ppg) is the only other player in double figures, although he hurts his team more than he helps by shooting a woeful 27.8 percent from the floor. Four others net between 8.6 and 7.0 ppg.

The Bears trailed Fresno State early in the first half of their latest game but used a surge late in the frame to take an eight-point lead into intermission, and they held onto the advantage the rest of the way en route to the victory. They outshot Fresno State from the field on the afternoon, 45.5 percent to 36 percent, and they held a 38-33 advantage on the glass. Tyrone Wallace tallied a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 3-of-4 from 3-point range in the process. David Kravish added 14 points, six boards, three blocks and two steals, while Jordan Mathews chipped in 10 points.

Cal has shined on both ends of the floor this season, as it shoots 47.3 percent from the field (including 39.4 percent from 3-point range) for 74.7 ppg while allowing only 59.2 ppg on 35.5 percent shooting. Wallace has emerged as one of the most well-rounded playmakers in the Pac-12 with 17.2 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 4.7 apg and more than a steal per contest. Mathews (15.5 ppg), Kravish (12.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2.3 bpg) and Jabari Bird (11.7 ppg) are great complementary options with each shooting better than 48 percent from the floor.

All three of Cal's wins in Berkeley this season have come by at least 20 points, and expect a similar outcome in this one against an inconsistent Montana squad.
