CAL. ST.-FULLERTON TITANS

Cal. St.-Fullerton Titans

Cal. St.-Fullerton Titans VS. Pepperdine Waves

Pepperdine (4-1) at Cal State Fullerton (3-5)

GAME NOTES: Off to a hot start to the season, the Pepperdine Waves will look to generate a winning streak as they take on the Cal State Fullerton Titans in a non-conference battle at Titan Gym.

Pepperdine had won the first three games of its season before the team dropped a 72-61 contest to Iowa on the road. But the Waves rebounded with a 66-56 victory over Cal State Northridge at home, and now will hit the road for a two-game stint, starting with a clash with Cal State Fullerton.

Cal State Fullerton has lost two of its last three games, including a 73-45 thumping at the hands of UCLA on Wednesday night. The Titans came out of the gate a little slow this season, earning a 2-3 record to start the campaign before entering into their last three contests.

Saturday's clash will mark the 23rd time these two programs will meet on the basketball court. The all-time series is all knotted up at 11 wins apiece. The series was equalized last season when the programs clashed, which Fullerton ended up taking, 78-64.

Pepperdine didn't have its best day shooting the ball when the team took the court against Cal State Northridge, but even a 36.7 shooting percentage in the first half was enough to give the Waves a 31-20 halftime lead - one they would not relinquish. Atif Russell led all Pepperdine scorers in the win with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting the ball. His performance was a bit overshadowed by Stacy Davis' 11-point, 13-rebound double-double, in which he also added five assists. Jett Raines netted 13 points with eight rebounds, and Jeremy Major contributed 10 points with six boards and four assists as the Waves cruised to victory.

Davis, who came on strong in the latter half of the 2013-14 season, once again leads the team in scoring heading into this matchup with Fullerton at 15.4 ppg, chipping in a team-best 9.0 rpg average. Raines is right behind Davis in both of those categories, contributing 13.2 ppg on 54 percent shooting, and adding in 8.8 rpg. Major checks in at third on the unit in scoring, netting 11.4 ppg to round out the trio of double-digit scorers. Amadi Udenyi leads the team with 25 assists on the season coming into Saturday's contest.

Cal State Fullerton went up against a tough UCLA squad Wednesday night, and had a dismal offensive showing. The Titans fell behind 40-23 at halftime, and finished the game shooting a mere 24.1 percent from the floor, which included a 4-of-20 mark from 3-point range. Alex Harris netted 10 points to lead the Titans in scoring, while Moses Morgan and Josh Gentry each chipped in nine points in the losing effort. Steve McClellan grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for Fullerton.

Lanerryl Johnson, who netted just eight points in the loss to UCLA, still leads the team in scoring with a 16.9 ppg average on 44.2 percent shooting from the floor. He's followed by Harris, who nets 12.5 ppg for a Titans team that is scoring just 61.2 ppg this season. Fullerton is also giving up 68.8 ppg to opponents, so defense will need to be emphasized against a strong Pepperdine offense. Joe Boyd leads the Titans in rebounding at 6.6 boards per outing, followed closely by McClellan's 6.4 rpg mark.

Fullerton may have the home advantage in this one, but Pepperdine's scorers, led by Davis, will be too strong for the Titans to contain. Between Davis, Major and Raines, the Waves can put up points in bunches.
