Recap: BYU vs. Stanford
Provo, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Haws scored 24 points as the BYU Cougars held on to defeat the Stanford Cardinal, 79-77, in non-conference action at the Marriott Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Cougars (9-3), winners of two straight and five of the last six, was Chase Fischer with 16 points, while Kyle Collinsworth filled his stat line with 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Off the bench, Anson Winder accounted for 13 points, but his 6-of-10 shooting at the free-throw line nearly cost the team the victory.
The Cardinal (6-3) was paced by Chasson Randle with 24 points and Stefan Nastic with 20 and nine rebounds. Fellow starter Reid Travis knocked down 7- of-11 from the floor as he tallied 15 points.
BYU opened the contest on a 13-4 run, but the team ended up shooting only 43.8 percent from the field in the first half, compared to 48.5 percent for the visitors, which allowed Stanford to stay within a point at the break, 36-35.
With under five minutes remaining in regulation the Cougars built their lead to 13, but down the stretch Stanford began to chip away and pulled within a basket in the final minute.
Trailing by two, 79-77, Stanford had a chance to take the lead with less than 10 seconds remaining, but a 3-point attempt by Randle from the top of the key bounced off the rim and was collected by the Cougars. Winder then went to the free-throw line for BYU and promptly missed a pair of attempts, giving Stanford's Robert Cartwright one last desperation shot at tying the game at the buzzer, but that too missed the mark.
In a game that featured four ties and eight lead changes, the Cougars survived just 6-of-21 shooting behind the 3-point line by outscoring the Cardinal at the free-throw line by a 21-7 margin.
